Bless me father for I have sinned...
« on: June 01, 2010, 07:58:10 PM »
I have bought and been riding a KLR650 (Kawasaki for cripe sakes  :o) for the last couple of months.  I love the flexibility of the bike.  Torque-y, tall, rough and tumble.  It's a "dual sport".  My brothers and I have all bought them with the notion of doing logging trails, dirt and highway.  I love the bike.  The KLR community is great - there are knowledgeable experts in the KLR world as well (who'da thunk?).  Yee haaaaa!

I miss my K6.  It's currently "under the knife".  In spite of my joyous KLR riding, I really want to get my beloved K6 back on the road.  There's no doubt about my affinity for the SOHC4s.  I view my "straying from the pack" as a good thing.  I feel like I appreciate my SOHC4 bikes more than ever.  The definition I now ponder of my K6 is more clear.  I know what I want.

Here's the three bikes while we were up in da nort woods.

Well, I am sure it does great job doing what it is designed for but it sure ain't as pretty as the old Honda. ;D  Maybe it's my age but so many new bikes look like Mighty Morphing Power Rangers or Transformers to me.  Now if Megan Fox would come with it..... ;D

I've owned a Concours for ten years now, and many Concours owners have KLR's as well.

KLR's are good bikes.

I have enough trouble trying to decide which bike to ride, but I wish I had a KLR too.

Great fun, affordable bike.  Did I mention they're affordable!

Perfect match for the K6.  Now you have an excellent road bike, and fun bike for the logging trails.  Ride safe!

Pull out that stationary motor mate, and shove yer K6 engine in there, and you'll have the perfect chicken chaser! ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Think of your KLR as a test bike allowing you ride trails and dirt roads as a test for taking your CB750 down there later ;). I did this at the weekend...took my VStrom 2-up with luggage over Old Cherry Mountain Road in the White moutains, New Hampshire - dirt/gravel road - steep up and down - test ride before trying it with the 750 ;)

and previous trips:

And I agree that having a modern "boring" bike makes you appreciate the CBs so much more!

Have fun with it,
cheers
Andy

The only thing that saved you from total damnation is that you "added" the Kaw to the stable, instead of "replacing" the K.

Bless me father for I have sinned...
I think it's "Forgive me Father...."

It was "bless me father" at the church I attended (with the priest behind the screen) as a child but that church had a lot of things screwed up including a priest who got a lot of notoriety for "not so priestly" activities.  I look back and am thankful I was not one of his victims but I'm pretty sure I knew many who were not so lucky.  After asking questions about scripture, I was scolded and told it was up to the church to interpret the bible for me.  I think my former church has come a long way (towards improving) but it is my former church ;)

The bikes were between 2-3K each. ...which I consider pretty cheap.  The quality, however, just does not seem the same as a CB to me.  One indicator of the quality variability is that the three bikes pictured feel so different (brakes, suspension, torque, idle).  They should be more similar.  They're certainly not SOHC4s.

Dookie: (The Honda dual sport was on the short list.)  After considering a lot of different factors and bikes, the "swaying" factors came down to a couple of things: KLR is water cooled, popularity and availability of parts, seat position/comfort.

Andy: Your pic reminds me of Wisconsin (where we road last weekend).  Simply beautiful.

I think Terry's on to something.  The way the KLR makes power is completely different.  It's got a lot of torque but I can't help but miss the RPM range and extra horsies of a CB750 engine.
