Davida Classic "Pudding Bowl" helmets.
« on: February 05, 2006, 11:08:47 AM »
They are PERFECT for the whole Cafe Racer/Rocker look and I really want one, but they are still 1950's technology.  They have the right look, but would thay actually provide any protection in a crash?

I mean racers wore 'em back in the day so they must have done something.

Any input is appreciated.

Simply put, those puddin' bowl helmets are not going to offer the same amount of protection
as a a 3/4 or full face. Davidas are among the best of that style, but it really is a style versus
function choice. Remember early football helmets? Pretty much just a leather shower cap.
Sure, they offered some protection, but we have learned a lot since the 1950's.
That being said, I wear a japanese puddin' bowl, I like it and yes, it was a style decision but
my riding is usually commuter, about 15 minutes each way on inner city streets.
If I was doing a lot of freeway riding, I would get a full face.
Bikes parked out front mean good chicken-fried steak inside.

       Hey,

Even the 1st motorcycle helmets were leather! I figure that, in an accident, your brain could
turn into "Pudding"! Know what I mean! I agree, give me better protection. Later on, Bill

How are they not lega in the UKl?  Are you required to wear a whatever-the-UK-equivlaent-of-the-DOT-is Approved helmet?

I know it meets no standard anywhere in the world, but even in the US, as long as you have something on your head, (cooking pot, salad bowl, Weber grill top with a duct tape chin strap) you're usually good.

Hell I tihnk those standard are arbitrary anyway, so I'm not overly concerned if it doesn't meet the specs.

These are pretty cool too: http://www.designerhelmets.com/prodlist.php?cat=Draxtar&prod=P-104

There are a bunch of nice looking helmets on that site. It looks like most of them are European? I like the fighter pilot helmets, but I'd rather have the full face protection any day of the week.

Davidas aren't legal in the 'States, either.  BTW- there is more danger of head injury near your home in town than on a freeway.
That said, I wear one most of the time for trips of 75 miles or less.  They are a very noisy helmet- LOUD. To help ameliorate that, I've put a pair of sheepskin patches in the ear flaps. I can't stand ear plugs, so it helps.  My head is more oval and the helmet is rather round, so when I need a haircut, it preses too much on my forehead.

So in England... I hope to God when you open a packet, it doesn't have a little peice of paper that says, "Inspected by no. 7"   Know what I mean, jellybean?

Davida's are not approved? FWIW, Da Vida in spanish means "gives life", so it seems like a contradiction.

Roland Brown is pictured with a Davida in almost every classic bike article he writes. i thought they are cool but I still feel safer with my integral helmet, wearing it everytime I get my bike, as I never know when my next -and maybe last- accident will happen.

Looks like a BSA B31/34, I had a ZB31 with ridged rear end.
Last brit bike I had on the road was a 500 B33, got fed up of being out run by little Hondas ;D so bought my first Benly 8)

The first 125 and 150 twins that Honda made.

It started with the C90 and CB90 (not to be confused with the 90cc singles) these was 125cc twins in 1957.

Next came the C95 and CB95, these was the 150s but was actualy 154cc in 1958.

In 1959 the 125s was revamped and called C92 and CB92. The Cs was touring, the CBs sports models.

They exported to the states models CA92 CB92 and the CA95.

Hope this helps Ern.

SamCR750, That bike is actually a pre-war Triumph T70 250cc motor in a frame which I built myself (feather-bed style). It wasn't good for much more than 100mph but I never failed to make the finals of open 250 races on it.
Uncle Earnie, I've attached a photo of the Benly CB92 which I restored from a box of bits.

Hey old biker,

1st Honda I ever saw was a 125 Benley Super Sport with a 150 kit in it (or at least that's what I was told). It was eating up a race track in New Port, Arkansas. Sounded like a well tuned sports car zipping around the track. Later on, Bill

John, it looks very BSAish from the photo, bet you wish you still had the Benly Sport though.

You're right Sam, it ran like a well oiled sewing machine but as I'm a pensioner I could not afford to keep a bike just to look at it. It went to a chap in Yorkshire and later I heard that he had exported it to Japan. I just have my CB400f now and a car to transport my wife who suffers from Arthritis. This is not a grumble as I am fairly happy with my life, I just would like a little more to pursue my hobbies.

I am still confused!! To buy or not to buy a Davida. In my state there is no helmet law but I prefer to have something on my brain to save it. I love the look of them, I really like the one that Carpy wears http://www.cb750cafe.com/. But if they are not going to offer me any protection I am not going to pay $280 for the looks. Does anybody on here own one that can give me any input on them? I guess I can alway order one and see it for myself but I would like to get more input on it first. I understand that they won't protect like a full face or a 3/4 but will they protect as well as other half helmets like the M2R?

As for the M2R helmets, if anyone has one, does that sticker on the front of them come off? Right now I have a full face. I like the helmet but it is UGLY. I want to have a half helmet aside from the full face but I want to be picky about the look of it this time.
