Did I Lace These Spokes Correctly?!
« on: April 18, 2010, 08:46:25 AM »
OKay. I just spent a good part of last night lacing my 1975 CB750F hubs to a set of wheels that I had Buchanans make.

KEEP IN MIND
Hubs are stock.
Buchanans made the spokes and wheels knowing they were going onto my hubs.

Inside spokes have the 95 degree angle while the outside spokes have a longer hook less than 90 degrees.
The holes in the wheels point straight to the correct spokes. All of the nipples (would) seat properly in the holes.

I used these two DIYs.

http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=368.0  (the one that says it is submitted by Dan Jones (Jonsey))

http://www.sohc4.net/index.php?q=content/lacing-motorcycle-wheel   (the spoke types part is confusing and looks like it was written up backwards)

Here are pictures of my wheels.

Front:

Even with all of the nipples threaded in all of the way on the spokes the hub moved freely. I think they shipped me a spoke set for a 19" wheel.

Rear: (this is a deep drop center wheel)

Did I lace the spokes correctly?
What do you think is wrong here?

Thanks!

Something isn't right, those nipples are WAY too loose!  I relaced my stock front hub onto a stock rim with Buchanan spokes this winter.  After truing, the nipples were all pretty close to flush.

Here are a couple shots of my wheel before lacing.  One trick I heard was to take a reference point, say the valve stem.  Take one of the spokes next to the valve stem, say the "back side - speedo" spoke as a primary spoke.  Pair the primary spoke with the "front side - speedo" spoke that crosses it.  Count the number of nipple holes between the pair (11 in the 2nd picture below).  Repeat for the two spokes directly across from the primary pair.  You now have four spokes in.  Now, lace in all the "inside" spokes on both sides skipping 4 holes from the previous.  Finish up with all the "outside" spokes.  Run the nipples down to flush or maybe 2 threads below flush.  The idea is all nipples should be screwed on the same.  If too loose, give each nipple another turn, too tight, back them off.  Once you have all spokes tight and all nipples screwed on close to the same, it's time to start truing.

If you are unsure as to which hole in your hub is for an inside or outside spoke, look closely at the edge of the hub ring.  You should see small "dents" where the previous spoke crossed it.

Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

It's laced up wrong.
If you look at the "groups of 4 spokes" (you have 10 groups of 4 spokes- 40 spoke wheel),
you'll see that your lacing of each group on the hub is 4 holes apart. They should be 6 holes apart on the hub (see pic- the red and green arrows show the spoke lacing on the hub and where they go to on the rim). The red arrows show the side closest, green shows the further side.

This is assuming that the new rims take the same lacing as the stock rims do.

Well let's see. My front rim is 18" instead of 19. If I try Fishheads 6 holes apart on the hub it is impossible to lace the wheel. The holes in the rim are not drilled to take that pattern.

The way I laced it in the first picture is the ONLY way the holes in the rim will take the spokes.

Okay well after doing a side by side comparison of your wheel and mine I am sure they sent me spokes for a 19" hoop.

I'm also pretty sure the spokes for the rear are too long too because of the deep drop center rim. Looks like they sent me spokes for a standard rear rim.

I'm going to call them tomorrow and prolly end up sending all of it including my hubs in so they can fix this #$%*. >:(

Your pattern is incorrect, you need to relace. Looking closely at the pattern of the spokes in the pic I sent, on the same side of the hub, focusing on one spoke there is a cross three pattern. Your spoke angle is too straight and only a cross two pattern.

Fiqure out the front & the rear will make sense too.

Hint, you need to cross on two axes, not just one.

Using a four hole pattern, start with the inside spokes. Notice that on the rim you have inside and outside holes. This is were you have messed up. The inner spokes fit into the outer spoke holes on the rim, the outer spokes fit into the inner spoke holes in the rim. It took me better than 5 hours to do my first wheel, the second took only took 20 minutes. I can now lace a wheel in under 10 minutes.

Before you send them off, putz with them.
Here's a pic showing the rear wheel from the Jones write up.

compare it to what you have.
