where to get a CB500 rear tire rim?
« on: June 07, 2010, 02:45:56 PM »
well, while on my recent motorcycle trip i noticed a wear spot on the tread that was getting larger and larger. put the bike on the center stand and spun the rear tire. noticed that the rear rim was bent pretty bad. no point in putting on a new tire and wearing that down. so my question is: where might i be able to find a NOS rear rim for a 72 CB500? i figured i would use the same wheel center and maybe some replacement spokes. thanks

Stock rear rim is an 18", has 40 holes, and a 1.85" tire bead width.
I think any 500/550 will fit.  If you want a 2.15" tire bead width CB750's will also lace on.

hey thanks guys. Yeah the idea is to buy a new rim, not buy used and possibly endup with another bent rim. So on to the next question... How difficult is it to respoke these rims and should i use the same used spokes or new ones?

i recently respoked my first set of wheels. its not as hard as it seems..takes a little time and patience, study the pattern of another 40 spoke wheel.. do one side at a time, start with the spokes that come from the inside of the hub, then do the outer spokes, flip the rim, and repeat. its a simple 4 cross pattern. if you can, get another wheel to look at and follow the pattern, it will go a lot easier. I actually used my old spokes, but when i was looking for new ones i was reffered to http://www.buchananspokes.net/  It looks a lot more intimidating than it really is.. theres only one way to learn.. good luck!

Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

Hey Wes,

As nice as your bike is, it will be worth the extra money for new spokes. And use stainless, if you plan to keep it.

Good Luck.

got mine here

http://www.powersedge.com/pages/parts/viewbybrand/7/default.aspx

thanks for the link, thats exactly what i was looking for. not a bad price either.

i would like to respoke with new spokes but buchananspokes is asking way more than i want to spend at $90+ a set. is it ok to use the original spokes that are already on my bike? how about the $30 set of spokes from parts n more?

West, I used Parts'n'more spokes for one wheel and Sudco for the other. I'm happy with both. Parts'n'more is cheaper. Don't sweat lacing the wheels. This was my first time and it wasn't that hard. Take your time, know what it is you're trying to do and you'll do fine. Build a wood stand for the wheel and spring for a cheap dial indicator at Harbor Freight. I think this is the instruction set I used - not sure.
