used parts prices
« on: June 03, 2010, 11:07:36 AM »
Hi,

I'm going to look at some parts from a 76 CB750 and would just like to get an idea of what others have paid or been paid.

First up is a seat lock and key.
Second on the list, hard side saddle bags with hardware. Didn't say a brand. Says they're in good condition, some scratches. I know this one is VERY vague. The ad also says he has fairing and trunk so I'm guessing Vetter type setup.

Like I said I'm just looking for some idea of what they might be worth, a starting point for negotiations. I'm going to look at them tomorrow night and can always walk away if the prices seem out of line.

thanks,

bud.

not sure about the bags but seats range from $25 on up.

with used parts its a matter of how bad you need the part and how bad the seller wants to sell the part.
also where the part is listed.  if its on some slow moving board that no one is on then good deals can be had.  but Ebay were everyone and their mother can find the parts is a different story

i troll around looking for deals.  the leg time adds up but scores are out there.

Vetter saddlebags in good condition with the correct mounts for your bike can go for about $100. Sometimes more. The mounts for a CB750 are a lot harder to find than the bags themselves. The Vetter fairing would be much cheaper - $50 or less - because there were a lot more of them and the mounts are easier to find.

The lock set may go for $25 or so.

If you can get the parts for less than this you are getting a good deal.

If its the only part available and you have to have it...........the price is the price.  If you are comparison shopping, then offer low because a better condition item will always turn up at a bargain price.

Thanks for the answers so far.

Let me add that I don't have a critical need any of the above items. My K1 doesn't have a seat lock now (except for when my 230 lb butt is on it) but I figured it would be nice to have.

The saddle bags would be nice to have for my K7, but there again I don't have to have them.

Both are "wants" and not "needs."

Bud, I have a vetter windjammer 5 and a mount. I had it on my 77 so the bracket might work on your 71.
I will have to make sure I have the headlight bucket.
It is the common brownish red, pretty dark. One crack on right side but not too bad. Previous owner dumped the bike over and tore the heck out of the trim and cracked it.
I replaced the trim and it doesnt look too bad but I never fixed the crack but the crack is not bad. The fairing looks pretty decent for its age really. It also has a new windshield, a tall one that covers better if you are tall. I get the screen and used it for 1 season and took the fairing off. Only "bad" part is the soft cover for the left pocket. A couple buttons pulled out but that seems common with weathered leather. The right locking cover is loose but that is just some new rivets, I just dont have a rivet gun.
It might sound bad but it really isnt. I can get some pics for you if you want. I am in Mapleton so it would be easy to pick up with no shipping costs.

Used parts prices are unpredictable... supply and demand sets the price. Ebay stuff is well known to be unreliable: poorly described, often misrepresented, expensive to be shipped, and without warranty... but sometimes cheap.
Used bike parts dealers generally charge half the list price for decent (undamaged) parts. As a rule they let you see parts before buying and you get a guarantee that they will work. You can dicker on parts that are worn or cosmetically damaged. I prefer to buy from my local bike boneyard because of these advantages, and resort to ebay for things they don't have.
