My home town Trondheim, Norway was a German submarine base during WWII, and the big DORA submarine bunker is still here. Today it's been converted to civillian use...
The U-995 that now is a museum in Kiel, Germany, were at the Trondheim base when the war ended, and served with the Norwegian navy until the sixties. It's a Type VIIC/41 U-boot.

Have you read the book Iron Coffins by Herbert Werner? Probably the best book written about serving aboard and then commanding a submarine in WWII.
