I hear you on the cold.  That and the funds keeping me away from the bigger projects on the bike.  Keep us updated on the Pamco ignition.  I think I may opt for that if my coils are toast.  I tested for continuity.  The primaries failed but the secondary coils were good... So I'm gonna try to use the old setup.  If she doesn't fire up I might just opt for the Pamco since it's only a $50 difference for what I would pay for the stock setup.

Hey Hey!!!  That is a beautiful rack!!  ;D Love the color scheme!!!  (makes me want to steal your idea....but I wont  ;))

I was always leary about painting the carbs...just incase one got a gas leak... But I'm sure you'll be fine!!

LOOKING SLICK!

PS... that beer looks good... I wish it was as cheap up here as it is down on your end.  A lil' tip from my penny pinching Canadian tip bank... if you remove the word "Light"... you get to enjoy the beer more in both flavor and effect. haha

Cheers!

i used engine enamel on the carbs to hopefully prevent runs from gas. i baked it on, it is a little flaky and chips a little bit, if i did it again i prolly wouldnt paint them. its the most painstaking process youve ever seen, hopefully a little time to work on the bike tomorrow and saturday, time will tell.  by all means you can steal my idea, i of course stole your paint color combo. and blue light is my fav cheap beer. costs us about the same as bud light, maybe a little more. theres a bar down here that has it in their dollar bottles menu. i drink light bc i have to keep this immaculate figure of mine!

i considered painting my carbs, then promptly gave up on that after cleaning them!  i don't know how guys have the patience to paint/polish them!  i just stuck with painting the float bowls and top's.  just did a nice coat of silver...

I don't reccomend painting if you don't have patience. Taping took at least 30 min per body. Its easy just time consuming.

been wanting to do this for a while, convert to harley controls and add auto cancelling turn signals. take your basic sportster controls and add badlands part number ATS-03. now just to find some money to do it.

« Reply #61 on: March 19, 2011, 05:44:17 PM »
got the bike back home today

got the tach on
added an ato fuse block, its nice because you can use the atm or the ato fuses with it
installed the new coils
wired the pamco
put the new battery in
still have not figured out my turn signal issue it starts clicking as soon as i turn on the ignition. ill redo all my connections in the headlight bucket.....again, i bought a new relay but it still did it, anyone have any ideas whats going on here, also turn signals do not flash
hmmm what else
oh installed the carbs and got the cables ran, need to get shorter ones, used the ratchet strap technique to squeeze them on.
i kinda wanna run pods but dont wanna rejet for them, maybe ill bite the bullet and get new boots for my air box.
and i have an oil leak from somewhere, its slow, it wasnt happening before i transported it i dont think but its very slow, appears to be coming from two bolts on the bottom of the cases nothing weeping on the top end, if you look at the torque sequence for the crankcase in the shop manual they are 1 and 5. should i try torquing them down 18 ft/lb right?

edit, i want bar end mirrors, prolly gonna get some ebay cheapies.

we had a revelation, it ran on gas and idled...high but i have no throttle hooked up. will post another vid later, now to get exhaust on and stock bars. i need help with throttle routing, my low bars are too low for the stock cables, and im throwing on the stock bars for the time being. also having trouble getting fluid in the brakes how is it done, they are mostly dry i drained the old fluid out.

got the exhaust on, cut a little bit more off, looks pretty cool and sounds even better, #2 is not firing three is so its not the coils, maybe the plug is fouled. will look into it tomorrow and see whats going on there, still havent fixed the wiring issure with the signals....would the switch grounding out on the bars be the issue? i dunno ill look into it. will take some pics tomorrow.

well took the ol girl out on the road for the first time today, ran it on a reserve tank as my stock tank may have a little crud left in it and want to get a fuel filter before i run the bike on that. #2 is still not firing but going around the block once the throttle was open a bit it would suddenly get more power so im going with clogged slow jet on this one. becasue its stumbling a little on the lower rpm but once you get it up a bit it wants to shoot out from under me. still havent figured out the signal problem, no winking they turn on solid but its like they are not going through th relay. didnt get a chance to take pics was too excited to have it on the road. dmv made me buy a new plate because it had been expired too long bastards. hopefully will have the seat done tonight and will pickup a fuel filter tomorrow and take a nice long shakedown ride.

Well got everything done and took the bike out today. Everything went great until about 30 miles down the road she quit. She was sputtering and bogging for a bit and now nothing. Im on the side of the road right now waitin for a tow company. They are supposed to be here in an hour. So now I need to brainstorm. Its either not getting fuel or spark. I have no tools so I took the tank off and opened the petcock. Fuel came out. Che led the fuel filter and gas came out so that's good. Maybe the carve are plugged or charging system is shot. Who knows. Whatever im pissed

You must be close if you had it running 30 minutes!  Good luck troubleshooting.  I'm envious yours is running for more than a minute straight.  :-\  I bet the red-headed stepchild looked pretty sweet buzzing down the road!

it was a great feeling. well did some quick troubleshooting this morning. out of curiousitiy i hit the starter and it turned over and started immediately then proceeded to die. hit the kick and rumbled for a bit but was bogging like yesterday. put the multimeter on the battery 8 volts, like 6.5 with the bike running. so either we have an issue with the carging system or i was running too low of rpms for the charging or the new ignition is drawing too much power. i have no real data on the pamco. i really like it. the new coils could be thr culprit as well but they are supposed to be 5 ohms. ill test the charging system tonight after the battery charges up. ps battery is brand new. still havent gotten #2 to fire. i really dont want to pull the carbs again as getting them on the first time was a pita. does anyone have pics of cable routing on a 77-78k? i think i did something wrong as the choke is binding. not like i need it it cranks right up without it.

Okay bout ready to throw in the towel. Redid all the electrical connections again and cleaned them all. Turn signal issue still persists. Also the breakdown issue I think my brand new battery is bad already. Problem is I don't know what killed it in the first place. I left it on the charge for about a day and it still wont go above 11.5v with headlight installed when the ignition is turned on voltage drops to about 8.5v not even enuf to activate the starter selenoid. Grounds are good. I don't know wtf is going on. Battery is being tested by the place I bought it from so will see what they say. Otherwise bike is going to the dealer and see if they can fix it. I just want to ride the bike.
