I worked in prisons for 25 years and I am from North Carolina.  We downsized when I retired and I can see the magnificent view of the 16th green and the squirrels and birds keep me and my wire hair occupied.  My wife and I sit and have breakfast in our sun room and I plan to die here.  Yesterday after a big rain 5 ducks showed up to clean the temporary ponds.  My neighbor has a farm not far away and he makes scuppernong wine whic is a local tradition.  I officiate sports and work at a local University.  I could use a larger garage as mine is full of SOHC4's.

This picture below does a good job of explaining...

Are those the headstones of surfers who didn't quite survive "the big wave?"  :)

Good question.. I think they are just to honor busted boards to be honest.  Thats a big day out there in that picture.

...it's in the country but close to the city, plus it's in the hills with great roads for riding and a lot of wildlife. Here's the view off the back deck, the lake is just down the road. Oh, and no neighbor's yet so can p!ss outside all I want! [seems to be important on this thread but never really thought of it when we we were buying!]
Plus the dogs run free, taxes are cheap and no winter to speak of...paradise!

I can't afford to move.  My view out the kitchen window is through a gas station and on to a 6 lane divided highway.  Behind me the view is a shopping center that is mostly empty.  The house is paid for and is where I grew up.  The neighborhood has started to change for the worse.  With property values continuing to fall, we have no choice but to stay.

People look at me like I'm crazy for leaving SW Florida to come back to Cincinnati, but I'll take 4 months of crappy weather over 9 months of sweating like a pig. Having beautiful country twisty roads just across the Ohio river in N Kentucky makes riding motorcycles much more enjoyable. Lots more to do, and see here as well.

I've lived in the same house for 27 yrs.... have a great shop... nice house.... and an absolutely incredible neighbors...  back when we moved in I promised Harry next door that I'd always be here...  ( which I've turned into a vow to be here till they are gone )....  they are in their 80's now... and still fairly active...

My wife's a Realtor and maybe later we'll build something different...but for now...  I love my life and friends...

I hope you are Harry's good neighbor for a long, long time... I'm so thankful that my elderly mother has such great neighbors, some of whom have been around for 40+ years.

I live in the outskirts of Trondheim, Norways third largest city with a population of about 170000. It's a nice, clean, relatively safe place to live. (Well, very safe if you compare to cities in the US I guess...) We have fair summers (that I love) and proper winters (that I honestly could do with being shorter...) Beautiful and clean country to ride in, and tap water you can drink safely... :)
Low unemployment (about 3% nationally) and good wage levels. (I'm a pre school teacher and earn about $50000 a year...)
A bit on the expensive side, with relatively harsh taxes on almost everything, (and expensive gas! We're talking app. $8/gallon...) but good health care and social benefits. Bikes are expensive too. Expect to pay around $3000 for a decent useable seventies CB 750...

Still, I think the positives outweighs the negatives...

Here's a winter night view from our balcony....

Was always curious about moving to Norway and working for a couple of years. Only way you can learn about a place is live and work there, party there, love there etc.

Well, I thought this part sucked....

From Wikipedia:
Vandalism
The boll weevil, and sometimes even the entire monument, has been stolen many times throughout the years and each time was found and repaired by the city of Enterprise until July 11, 1998. On that day vandals ripped the boll weevil out of the statue's hands and permanently damaged the statue. City leaders were going to repair the original statue and put it back but it proved too difficult and costly. A polymer-resin replica was erected in its place in downtown Enterprise in 1998, and the original is on display at Enterprise's Depot Museum, a few hundred feet away at 106 Railroad Street.[3] There is a security camera nearby that monitors the monument for further vandalism.

We like to be close in to the mountains.  Right now God is putting on a magnificent fireworks show of lightening over the peaks just east of us.  Work keeps us here for now; but northern NM reminds us a bit of northern Israel, so it's good till we get back to Israel.

City life in Vancouver was okay; with the Coast Mountains close by just the other side of the bridge.

My family and I live 20 minutes from any small city/town, and an hour from a Seattle.  Close to the mountains, and amongst many rivers, lakes and streams.  I love to fish.
Along rivers and around lakes are some nice, traffic free, twisty roads.  ;)
It is VERY quiet where we are.  Most nights, the only things we hear are frogs, and the occasional fox howling. There are lots of kids under the age of 10, so my boys have buddies to cause trouble with.
The only pests i have to worry about are deer eating my plants, divebombing hummingbirds, and the occasional bobcat (but they do well to control the few rabbits.)
We are high enough that we get snow in the winter, and if the wind blows we usually lose power.  Makes for exciting fall/winters.  In our 100 acre community, there are only 50 homes.  the rest is protected forest.  i have neighbors, but they are far enough away i dont notice them.  many of my neighbors are law enforcement, and have become good friends.

But all of this is all gravy.  we moved to this area/school district because my youngest son is disabled, and this school district offers the best programs.  we are lucky we landed where we did.

I live where I do because We moved here when Karla started to school and the best school system in the area was said to be here in Greenwood. I don't have any pictures handy, to post up, but it's a nice neighborhood, nice folks, mostly retired families, quiet, except when I fire up the bikes or the GTX. ::) ;D It's about like living out in the country, but anything I might need isn't too far away. And, the neighborhood doesn't have any through streets, so, IF someone comes in here, they most usually are visiting or trying to sell something. The house AND THE GARAGE could to be larger, but I'm fine here. NOW, if I could just figure out how to get the grass to just grow only so high (got about a 1/2 acre to keep cut) and get the weeds to leave!

Bill, I know the area well.  I suppose there wasn't the x-c ski area back then, eh?  I've traipsed all over Black and Hollyburn Mtns.  It was very pretty when I lived there, about 15 years ago.  I'll bet the Winter Olypmpics ruined much of it.  ::)
