Any way to ID a stock airbox?
« on: June 06, 2010, 02:59:33 PM »
The motorcycle shop near me has a junk room with old parts. I found what looks like a CB750 airbox, which I need.

Is there any way to ID it? my bike is a K6...did the airboxes differ each year?

Cheers

Taylor

In what condition is your 74 airbox?
The one on my K4 has that rough, sorta flaky surface. I've heard of ways to make it shinier, like baking it, using a heat gun, sanding it with steel wool, etc. I was thinking of soaking it in something, or painting it.

Black ribed 2 types

77/78 has bigger intake holes and an elbow  riveted on top for emissions

71 -75 does not.. 76 I am not positive about but I think its same as 71-75..

I will try to get some photos of it, but I can tell you that it has that faded whiteish look on the ends from being outside for a long time. I will post some photos within the next day or so.

I'm having trouble finding out what year airboxes were different. I've got one on the way from a forum member, but I think it's for an F, not a K... we'll see how it works out.

I believe there were some F versions different than the K1-K6.  K6 is very similar if not the same as K1-K5.  When I say similar, what I mean is the holes for the air horns and mounts are the same.  Some seemed to have the air intakes laid out differently.  Some F's (possibly later?) were more like the K7/K8 airbox in that they had a larger air horn hole.

The fix for the finish of an airbox is supposed to be peanut oil.  In a fairly recent thread, someone used peanut oil to bring back the color (not sure about smoothness of finish) of an airbox.  They had pictures.  I'm skeptical but I was also skeptical about the wintergreen oil and xylol - now I'm a first hand believer.

Here is what my airbox looks like. Fits together nicely and all rubber is in good soft condition. Some slight dis-coloration as shown in photos, but other than the mounting hardware being rusted,in great condition.
