the iraqi war i believe was for noble intentions; people also forget that saddam broke all the u.n. resolutions and (an act of war) fired upon our planes, daily, in the no fly zone. if the war was over oil why has gas prices sky rocketed? if we're such imperialists shouldn't "our oil" be cheaper?

the gulf war didn't end. like the korean war, it was a cease fire upon strict guildlines.

saddam broke those in addition to the wmd issue.

islamo-fascists are fighting a centuries old war and they don't hate us because we're occupiers. they hate us and (other muslims) because we're different. period.

that mega mosque? why does it have to be smack dab on ground zero? on the sight where a building with (reportedly) a chunk of a plane now stands? and why open on 9/11?

freakin wake up.

i just had to vent and hate adding to this type of chatter.

bobby, thanks for bringing this back to the spirit of things. your father in law's tale, and you telling it here, is very much appreciated. thank you and god bless the both of you.

edit: i should add that i appreciate not only all the war stories people contribute (personal and otherwise) but those who have stories but cannot be here to tell them.

my deepest respect. we could not be on this forum spouting off if not for their service in the interest of liberty.

Thanks for sharing.

Sorry to say, but the men of that generation are almost all gone.....and very few have the guts to do what he did.

I wish.....there were more in the country who were willing to do what is necessary to keep us on top.

As it stands VERY few have served or will serve.  I do it, becasue it is what I know how to do.  I wouldn't be happy if I wasn't involved.

And for that....I am mocked by some.  How sorry they will be when the time comes that men who are willing to stand up are all gone.

I had Uncles in ww2 one was KIA at Bougainville in the soloman Islands. I inhereted the responsibility of keeping his flag, foot locker and posessions.  My wifes aunt had a brother that survived the war but was poisioned by German SS posing as americans while celebrating VE day. Another uncle drove trucks on the Burma road and yet another was in the battle of the bulge and witnessed the concentration camps, POW camps and told of walking skeletons and lampshades made of human skin. He gathered the family and told them today you have one free pass to ask anything about the war and then never mention it again. My dad had two war production jobs and worked himself until he looked gaunt and dark eyed. Yes, they were the greatest generation.

I was a soldier.  I went to Iraq. And every time I started feeling sorry for myself, I would look at a picture of my granddad in his uniform from WWII.  He was infantry and did most of his time in the Alps.  He made me feel like a Wuss.  Every time I looked at the picture, I manned up and soldiered on.  Some people didn't have that "constant" to keep them grounded to reality and they felt sorry for themselves the whole time we were there.  I felt bad for them mostly, but they did whine a lot.

Thanks for honoring those that went through one of the worst times in history; you inspired me to share. One last pic, this one is my dad; he was 17 when he volunteered, and my grandfather had to sign before they let him join up.

Great pic! My uncle was a signalman on a destroyer escort in the South Pacific, my dad was a seabee with the marines rebuilding airfields on Guadalcanal and Bougainville. After the war, Dad got out of the Navy and joined the Army for another 23 yrs. Then he went to school on the GI bill, got his Masters in education majoring in political science and geography, moved to Australia and was a school teacher down near Melbourne for another 25+ yrs. First bike I ever rode on was his Dream 305 when we lived in Okinawa....

Thanks for the thread and the memories...and to all the military families out there...

Traveler. I would be real careful about lumping my people together with Karl Marx, part of what the "Canadian military" did was provide for public dissent with blood and other things, (part of the ann coulter thing was once again a yank, coming to my country and telling us poor canadians that if we were just like the US every thing would be better.) it might be handy, if before you spout off about history to read about it, not just what comes out of GI Joe comics.
