Running Stock Gaiters on a SOHC without headlite ears.
« on: June 08, 2010, 09:44:02 PM »
I made up a set of these for a member on here. Holds the top of the gaiter off the fork and against the tree.

A lot of folks dont like the stock headlight ears, or just want to clean things up around the trees..

Cool! nice work-I've always liked the look of the gaiters and that's a great idea that you can keep them while changing up the headlight ears.

Are you planning on making/selling anymore of these? (especially for the 500/550s?)

Yes, I might make more if there is a demand.

will  work out shipping prices, & other detais.
These will be held on with a single screw, with oadded tip to prevent fork scarring.

Nice, subscribe.

I agree Moto, the gaiters look cool and the added protection to the forks and seals is important. My stock ears are gone and the gaiters were too.. PO  ::) but I don't like the stock ears, I'm not going for showroom looks. I put some gaiters on and just jury rigged em at the top, I might want a pair of those beauties. Wonder why the new bikes don't use gaiters.....  seals will last a long time with no grit getting at them.

Likely no real "added protection" with gaiters over dust seals. Ever seen gaiters come apart? They dry out and rip at the folds, letting in stuff to the unprotected seal.

Modern naked look dust seals are virtually fool proof. Fork seal leaking on modern bikes not a problem.

No fault to you for liking the way they look, but they are old school look. But most buyers of new bikes want a new bike look. Plus, in my mind, the gaiters are inferior protection long term.

Bringing it back to the OP, 754s dummy holders solve a problem and look good to boot, though they don't show. I like knowing I have cool parts even when they don't show. And you could pull the gaiter off, show off the part and put the gaiter back on.

Oh, OK on the modern seals, I see what you mean. Apology for thread jack.

Hey, 754 maybe you could make then in two pieces bolted together with recessed allen heads so I wouldn't have to remove my forks to put em on... I can be so lazy! ::)

 A few things here..

I can run a batch of 1 pce ones, price will  probably be in the 30 ish dollar range.. plus shipping.

2 pce ones , I just cannot make them cheap enough..

I am making little slugs out of alumimum or brass so the setscrew does not dig into the fork tube.. so it does not tear up new seals when you slip em over the tubes.. not that it would matter on a 73 or later 750..

Too bad though, I am not set up for paypal.. I am thinking of getting someone in the US to sell some of my parts, may be easier.

Not trying to rain on your parade, but you could just use generic set of gators and tied the top ends up with zip ties. That's what I;ve done on my Harleys. But, you do have a cool idea though.
This project started in confusion and will end in disarray.

Nice work!

Cycle X also sells some gaiters that don't rquire the headlight ear hardware FWIW, but they are not as well made as the OEM parts.

754,

I was thinking about making a set for my '73 on the Sherline. What type of aluminium did you use? Are there standard fork seals available that will fit the 35mm forks if you want to replace the gaiters?

Nice work BTW, it's always good to see some fabricating...

Thanks,
Lou
