heffey??? and purpose...
« on: June 09, 2010, 08:23:48 AM »
Has anyone heard from heffey lately???

I'm asking the question for a few reasons... but mostly because he was the reason I didn't come here for the last couple of years....  We'd disagreed on something and while one person shouldn't drive any show.... it was easier not to partake in this place.... even though I'm a total CB550 hound... ( okay maybe a bit more then a bit )....

In the last couple of posts on the military I have found several folks who have radically differing views and are more then willing to post up their obviously "wrong" opinion....  ( relax and smile it was honestly meant in jest )....   But Genuinely these folks have always had "real" value prior this this little excursion into their nether regions of consciousness....  So it leaves me wondering a few things...

Should I limit myself from the General forum??? and stick to the Virtually non exsistant ride reports that I so dearly love?

Or the Tech section where I might have some minor value...

Hmmm  Doesn't sound like fun to me....  So I'll try it a different way.....  and that is this....

What is our purpose here?  What's YOUR purpose for being here???

Mine is to hang out with folks who like Motorcycles and SOHC Honda's in particular...  I honestly don't care about your politic's, Religion or Harley affiliations.. ( well maybe a little bit on the HD thing )...

Keith

PS.... I actually went back and found heffay's resignation and stuff.... The guy was truly a stud puppy for the way he left the forum.... and again... I generally liked the guy.... and would really like to know how he's doing....

I don't know the guy.  But leaving a forum is kinda extreme.  It's not like we HAVE to be here or HAVE to respond to any threads or PMs.  If someone's really hounding you I think that's a matter for the mods to dispel.

It's real easy to take something personal and respond in the wrong manner.  We've all probably done it on one forum or another.  I've taken the stance here lately to approach things with a bit of levity and not get worked up because I know things would be said and taken differently by everybody if we were in a bar, well before last call anyway.
Just call me Timmaaaaay!!!

Keith, I find this place mostly positive and enjoy the tech side. However I also really try to avoid getting in the middle of some of the nonsense, there are some folks with too much time on their hands.

It used to be you could tell when the off season arrived, people would get testy!  ;D  Nowadays it seems there is always at least one abrasive thread on the go.

Take some of the stuff with a grain of salt, everyone has an opinion, it all adds to the fun I suppose.

Well keith, everyone is their own person. And while some people just rub each other the wrong way, I don't worry about it much. For example, us in the d-day thread. So we disagree some. It happens. We just move on hopefully. Heffay quit the forum about a year ago or so. He might be lurking though.
Some people just can't move on. Some can't handle any contest to their thoughts. Those are the ignore people. ;D

You can stay in the tech area but the open area is quite entertaining and really, I think it is one of the reasons this site has grown so much. it provides a wider interaction. Sure it is not always good but an internet forum is just an extension of society anyways.

My advice is to never take anything in the open forum seriously, at least for no more than 5 minutes. :)

This thread really wasn't about you Inigo... genuinely you push buttons in me... but it was more about the overall scope and to learn why your here.... what makes this place on the internet more entertaining then others....

Ultimately.... do we really need the politics.... or religion?  or lack of it for that matter.....

I find that there are alot of threads that should be in different forums.
Yes there is an open forum for stuff like that, but it is supposed to be a SOHC bike forum.

It also seems that there are some people who spend there time ruining a topic because they have such high regard for their own opinions.

My purpose here is to learn about my 550 K,to offer my limited knowledge,to offer parts ,sometimes for free,to buy parts,
and just to read about SOHC's mostly 550"s

Loud pipes suck.......

If you buy something.........pay for it !
If you sell something .......ship it !
If you say you are going to do something......do it !
If you have a question about something......ask it !
When the seller answers ........let him know whether you still want it or not !
If you receive something .....let the seller know you got it !
If you get something and are happy/un happy with it .....let the giver/seller know !
If you have any kind of issue,shipping/receiving/quality/price/shipping charges etc !

Welcome back Keith
The key is to not let disagreement in the open forum interfere with your interaction with the rest of the forum.  I don't mind political discussion but I also don't take it personally and will usually have no problem with those members in other threads with the exception of 1 or 2.  Most here have something of value to contribute, even ones you argue with, so why shut yourself off from that by ignoring someone.  If you can't keep this separate then it may be best to stay away from those "controversial" threads.

I think it makes the place a bit more interesting to have the open forum.  If it was just technical it would be a bit boring.  I am sure for everyone who feels that way another feels the opposite but you don't have to get involved and quite a few don't.

Sorry if I pushed your button. Like I said, it happens. It does not really do much good to hang onto it does it? Heck, you pushed mine too a bit but I let it go. After all, it was 1 instance. Not really that big of a deal.

tjjkc, look at the forums out there. How many of them concentrate on only 1 thing? Probably a lot but how many are as large as this one? My guess is not many.
If you limit a site to purely technical aspects of 1 thing, it wont last long. Sooner or later, all the main topics will be covered. No one will need help and no one will come back except for certain things that are just a search away. you lose that interaction.

now maybe my opinions stink, but then everyones do sooner or later to someone else. But why should I hold my opinions back? I don't expect others to do that for my sake. That is one of the awesome things about free speech.
Maybe I am gifted in that I dont let things on an internet forum bug me for long. There are more important things in real life to worry about. I dont even bother to ignore the people that might irritate me, I just go to the next topic.

Keith, I am honestly sorry we disagree. Hell we might not disagree that much if we talked in person. That is one downside of the internet. It is hard to convey nuances that can make all the difference.

So now that I have been all soapboxy, I just say, enjoy what we have here. Read what you want and don't worry about the rest. The only important thing is that we all stay safe.

I agree about the keyboard muscles here.... it's just the way of Forum's.... and I've seen them blow apart for a lot of reasons... but mostly because a couple of egg head moderators didn't control folks who where bound and determined to destroy it...  Long story...  Little to no value here...

I'm a moderator on two other forum's....  Bangshift.com and Landracing.com   it's a tough balance ... and no we don't allow politics or religion on either... and they do just fine....

If folks find politics interesting then we oughta have a place for them...  Yellow bullet is a great example of how Politics can be 100% wide open and you can be a screaming freak on either side ..... ( or like me you can sit back and enjoy the maylay for 2 or 3 threads and then move on )....

I agree it sucks to piss someone off and I know we weren't intentionally doing that.... just the way of the argument.... it is an all or nothing proposition like so much of politics and religion either you believe or you don't... and the other side while interesting can't have any value on your side...

... what's the upside to any of it....

Well tossing out political arguments has been tossed around before but the general consensus seems to let it happen. But you are right, they offer little. It always goes to 2 sides and neither bends.
