Nice surprise
« on: February 08, 2006, 11:12:54 PM »
I bought a cheap 77 CB550F last weekend. It looked pretty beat up, but the price was right. It still had the original exhaust in good condition, so that alone was almost worth the price.

The bike has been sitting in the garage for a week now, and the pool of oil beneath it has been growing steadily. I decided to go out and start the full inspection tonight, or at least determine where the oil was coming from. As I looked over the bike I started realizing that it was a bigger POS than I originally thought. The headlight doesn't work at all and the blinkers are wired through a 3 position switch installled into the headlight bucket. The rear brake sticks badly. Front brake pads are almost entirely gone. A lot of the chrome is blistered and peeling, the rear fender is bent. I should have inspected it more thoroughly before buying. I haven't even gotten to the oil leak yet and I still don't know whether it runs or not.

Then, just for the hell of it, I took the points cover off. There was a brand new Dyna electronic ignition staring me in the face! Made my night.

Well done mate, I had a similar experience years ago when the starter motor on my Suzuki GS1000S crapped out during a "speed trial" late one night, (I think I nudged the starter button at about 145 Mph......) anyway, the wreckers wanted 200 bucks for another used one, but then one of them offered me another complete GS1000S for 500 bucks for a parts bike, so I bought it "sight unseen".

He delivered the bike that afternoon, and my first thought was "What drain did you drag that POS out of?" the tank was rotted through, the seat was gone, as was the front fender, the pipe, and anything else of interest was either bent or busted. Luckily for me the starter motor worked.

A few months later I stripped out two exhaust bolts on my bike, so I thought about a head swap with the "parts bike". When I removed the cam cover, I discovered a pair of Yoshimura race cams in perfect condition! Woohoo! "Hmmmnnnn", I thought, what lies beneath? I whipped the head off (mild port work, but too many busted fins to be desirable) to find a beautiful set of 1085CC Yoshi hi-comp race pistons! Double Woohoo!

I tried them in my bike and they were pretty cool, (120Mph in third gear at 12000 RPM) but for reasons mostly forgotten, I removed them and sold the pistons, cams and cylinder block on Ebay for 750 US bucks (about 1200 Aussie "Pacific peso's" at the time) which pissed the bike wrecker off when I told him, but I used the money to buy my CB750K3 from him, and guess what? I think there's some "trick" bits lurking inside too, ha ha! Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I have a storage unit littered with that stuff. Funny how best intentions lay to waste for me and I end up selling one piece at a time painfully. ;) Hate to even sell the stuff sometimes.

That sounds terrible Tom, tell you what, box all that stuff up and send it on to me with those forks and bars for my K2 mate, I'll give it a good home, ha ha! Cheers, Terry. ;D
