Another stupid question (I apologize in advance)
« on: July 18, 2010, 08:02:42 AM »
Okay, another dumb question from me. As I've been fiddling with my '78 CB550 I've noticed that when I turn the ignition switch on, the headlight is always on. I can't seem to find a switch to turn it off. I have looked at this bike many times but have found no switch. I still haven't bought a manual for it, money's tight right now, but I will soon get one. So somebody tell me where the on/off switch is if there is one! Thanks

The Hlamp comes on automatically when ignition switch is turned on. There is only a Hi-Lo switch. By law in most states headlamp must be on when riding.

On some of those bikes (I am not sure which), when you hit the starter button the headlight will automatically go out so that all the power goes to the starter. Once started it will come back on. Not a dumb question...you are learning about the bike like the rest of us did. Have you put on a pic of your ride yet for us. We like pics here... ;D

Just so you'll know.....on some of the older bikes like mine (1972) there is an Off position on the High-Low switch. These were built before the law was passed requiring headlights to be on all the time.

Mine has a position that if i get it just right in between the high and low beam, it will turn off. I am 100% sure this is because of the 30+ yr old wiring in it.  ;D

My '76 550F does not have a switch either, so it's not a dumb question.
Although I would always ride with the light on, wish it had a switch so I could have it off when cold starting and idling. [I know, I could install one].

Thanks for the info guys. In Illinois we have a "Lights On" law also. Just thought I was going crazy or overlooking something. Yes, I am still learning about old Hondas. My only other bike experience is with Harleys ('85 and older), and brit bikes so thank you for helping this Honda newbie out.
