The retainer is off, which way do I pound?
« on: June 13, 2010, 04:16:58 PM »
Do I pound from the bearing retainer side or the opposite side?

I am in the middle of it right now, hopefully I can get an answer so this weekend wasn't a complete waste.

I pounded toward the retainer side. Try to pound in a circular pattern so she does not jam. Now I did a 750K and you did not specify the bike. That may change things. Take the new bearing kit and throw it in the freezer for as long as you can to shrink them. Heat up the hub to make it expand, take the kit out of the freezer and you will be surprised at how easy they pop back in when you do that. Good Luck!!!

Mine is a 1978 CB550K. I tried heating the hub to get the old one out. I think I have moved it a little, but not sure.

At least I know I am moving them in the right direction. I guess it is going to be harder than I anticipated.

I already have the new bearings in the freezer, thanks again for the pointer.

That one under the retainer is tough. Once you get that one out take the center tube out. I pounded the second one out with a peace of pipe and a hand sledge. You will feel a great sense of accomplishment when it is finished. Nah, the truth is you will be glad it is over.

Well, all done.  Looking back, with better instructions, this is a piece of cake. The bearing under the retainer is really easy with a slide hammer. The other side goes out the other way. My problem was that I was trying to pound everyhing out from the wrong side.

Anyways, once you know how they are set up, it is really easy.
