A 4-2 will get you a much lower tone than any 4-1.

That 4 into 4 is what made me want to get Benji's 4 into 4. It sounds just about the same. My Dad says that riding behind it sounds like an old rotary airplane engine.  ;D  I love it.

Crossovers can make for some deep sounds.  Here's my CB with a 1-4 2-3 crossover on it.

You get the lope out of matching the firing pistons up.  Makes for a good bass note, but I'm sure it's screwing with the back pressure terribly.

Shotguns . . .

He finally starts the bike at 1:25 and does sound cool. Please note the Dunlop K70's I espouse on tire threads.
This project started in confusion and will end in disarray.

the crossovers were an old aftermarket set.  I cant remember who made them.  These are 1-4 2-3 crossovers.  The 1-3 2-4 crossovers were a lot more common.

The exhaust frequency of a short stroke 4 cyl is a lot higher than that of a long stroke big bore twin.  Loud is dooable but deep and throaty isn't with the SOHCs, just as others have said.  Now for my soap box.  I know a lot of riders, been riding with the twin crowd for a long time and most of the older riders have the same issue I have.  For the past 10 or so years you couldn't get me to gut a perfectly good exhaust for the sake of making it louder.  I value what little hearing I have left too much to be that foolish again.  Ride with open pipes and a few years down the road you will be loosing it as well.  It sneaks up on you.  One day your wife will be yelling at you cause you didn't hear her call you for dinner.  Next thing you know your deaf as a door knob and the Doctor tells you that you should have known better.  Take it from someone who knows.

Custom pipes are nice, custom pipes with baffles are better.  Your motor will enjoy the backpreasure as well.

In my experience with cars and bikes over the years, bigger ports tends to give a deeper note to the exhaust....

i ride with open 4-2.  i work as a music producer.  i wear earplugs and i suggest the same for anyone riding with loud pipes.  it really does sneak up.

btw, those shotguns are killer, sound fairly similar to mine, but how cool looking.

Ear plugs are a necessity, not just for loud pipes.  According to the Audiologist (?) wind noise and rapid preasure changes from the buffetting cause just as much damage as the loud pipes.  But one additional note.  Even if you protect your ears with ear plugs, others around you can be affected by your open pipes.  Unless you only ride solo and in the open country, second hand noise is as bad for their hearing as second hand smoke is for your lungs.
