Any Co. Make Loud Deep Sounding Pipes?
« on: June 10, 2010, 07:03:47 PM »
Something that projects like a Ducati Monster, deep, throaty yet load in db.

Can I achieve this by drilling out baffles/cutting pipes shorter? Do I need a large megaphoned exhaust? Not concerned about inspection (I've got a guy for that).

I have a '78 CB750K.

That great deep Ducati sound, is the sound of a V-twin.

Probably the cheapest way is a Mac 4 into 1 with a straight unbaffled pipe - no silencer.
This project started in confusion and will end in disarray.

i have an unbaffled 4-2.  sounds great, loud.   but the v-twin comment is spot on.  nothing makes 4 pistons sound like 2.

An un-baffeled 4-1 sounds great, but it  defiantly takes a certain someone to tolerate all that noise. I like loud motorcycles but one day at the track sans silencer was enough for me. Its kind of hard to enjoy the ride, (or concentrate) when all you hear is exhaust.

You can get a 4-1 to sound a little more baritone by replacing the insert with fiberglass. Leaving the bung in will cut down on some of the high pitched rasp as well.

I like MC's sound, deeper to my ear.........btw MC, to avoid overloading the mic. on your vidcam, try moving it 20 ft. away from the bike and max the zoom in to make the bike fill the viewer........just sayin'...

Thanks I like the sound also. But my bikes not done yet. I'm hoping it will be quiet (not what the OP wanted) as well as low.

As to the video, its not my bike. i was able to find my style pipe mounted on a CB750 (I think that's what it is) belonging to someone else who made the video. Good to know about the audio, as I hope to do a better job when I'm up and running.

I like the low tone, and maybe the OP would rethink the "loud" issue.

If you really want loud, all you have to do is run open pipes  :P

Deeps good, but too loud of a pipe is asking for trouble. Around here the cops will stop and ticket you if your exhaust's too loud.

I like Carpy's pipes, both in styling and sound. And if that's the video I watched, that's with the removable baffle in place, so that can become louder, if you want.

I see . . . so its the larger v-twin thats producing that deeper baritone hum gotcha, thanks. I do like the sound of the Marshall pipe MC thanks for that. I do like the sound of carpy's pipes as well kinda ferrari-ish, however, pricey.

HAHA! Anyone happen to hear the nagging wife/girlfriend/daughter B&Ming "OK, next time, let's not do that with me . . ." on the video below Carpy's at 0:24 seconds.

Yeah, $450 is up there, but all the 4-1 exhausts I've seen were at least $300, so it's not a huge difference. It is hand made so hopefully the quality is up there too. It's the leader of the pack for me right now, and as soon as I get my wheels and tires sorted out, that's next on the list.

my buddy picked up a set of mackie pipes for his 550 and they sound alright except it kinda rattle like a tin can sound so maybe some fiberglass will help there in the baffling... if you think about it its worth it to save up another couple bucks and pick up the carpy system

For a CB750....the Carpy "yoshi" pipe is #1.

Sometimes, you have to spend the money to get the one part that will make the bike.

Cut corners now.....you will regret it later.

Some things you can scrimp on.....this is not one....IMHO.

Biggest thing with Carpy and his pipes is availability. They're hand made but not by him. He gets them in batches and I'm not sure if he accumulates orders before construction. And when he gets them they're raw steel so add more working time for ceramic coating. I spoke with him several times over a period of three months and he either had none in stock or a batch was on order and already sold. They are the cat's pajama's though.
This project started in confusion and will end in disarray.

Who make's that exhaust? It looks like Benjie's Trixie Special 4-4 exhaust.

If it is, "rediculously unaffordable" is $1200. Which it definitely is  :D

my 500 has a 4-1 with an oval automotive straight through resonator, love the look or hate it!$48bucks and it sounds great,i shimmed the outlet down to gain a little backpressure and take the rasp out of it,man its cheap, hows my genuine sticker from 1970?
