Neighbor has a 1980 CX500 - Might be giving to me
« on: June 10, 2010, 08:20:31 AM »
around 11 last night this lady up the street rang my doorbell asking me or my roommate to help lift a bike she knocked over with her car.  She said its sat at her rental for a while and is throwing it out if the guy moving out doesnt take it.  I said I'd find it a home.

Other than it being ugly, and not having a title its still free.  She was given the bike a long time ago so I'm guessing I'd have to go through some process with the DMV to make it legit although I think I'd just part it out.

Whats up with these bikes.. the thing looks hideous

Search, man, search!  The CX's have been discussed a time or three...

I happen to like 'em a lot.  I've owned three - a standard and to Customs.  Really good bikes all 'round.  And ugly?  Well, beauty is in the eye and all that.  Unless it's ugly as in "sat-outside-against-a-wall-in-the-rain-and-elements-for-7-years" ugly...  :)

..and not having a title ..

Be ware of this one. Just because she doesn't have the title, doesn't mean it isn't titled to the absent owner. Changing this could be a long, drawn out, or impossible process.

The CDI box is notoriously fluky on this bike - and difficult to diagnose, as it will still spark, just at the wrong time.

Buying them used on ebay can be a nightmare - cause if they are for sale, chances are thats what was wrong with the bike to begin with!

My father in law bought SEVERAL before he found a good one.  But now that its running, its a decent bike.

As a guy who only has a CX in his stable right now I resent the ugly part. The only people allowed to refer to them as such are those of us who own them  ;)

Actually Cafe'd out they look bad ass! Just check out cornandp's thread for proof!!!

I searched for threads with that user name but nothing showed up.  Any tips?

Sitting outside for years hasn't helped this bike that is for sure.  Just seems very cluttered and the "flying V" engine orientation seems strange looking to me.

early ones are prone to cam chain adjuster failure, a fairly easy fix though with a stronger design that is still available through honda dealers. From what I found when I had one and researched a bit, they were supposedly the first production hondas with comstar type wheels, shaft drives, v engine configuration and water cooled. I liked it, very unique design elements, it ran well though I had trouble keeping the valves adjusted, it felt solid except I had to get used to the weird feeling of the bike wanting to twist out from under you when accelerating. They seem to be very popular in England but I don't see many around here, for free if you can get a title go for it.

Stators are a problem and engine drop to repair. If it's free I grab it and part it out
