Im running lean, right? 1975 Cb 550

the bike was running ok but sluggish at all throttle positions. it had been fully tuned up and double checked multiple times but the plugs were still looking uneven. #1 was pure fluffy soot. #2 looked brand new. #3 and #4 looked ok but somewhat sooty.

I think the culprit was my float levels so I spent today fine tuning them.  I just got the carbs back on and took a ride and now it takes off like a crazy rocket; the acceleration is better than its ever been however the rpms are going crazy and they are hanging up. If i put in the choke it brings down the rpms.

could I have adjusted the float levels too lean? im shocked at the amount of difference the float levels made.

Did you synchronize the carbs to all read the same intake vacuum at idle.  The hanging rpm could also mean the carbs out of sync.

well they were synched before I messed with the levels today but I did not re-synch them yet. I thought they would be at least in the ball park but I guess I should check that out before diggin back into the floats.
