Spoke torque
« on: February 06, 2006, 11:10:46 AM »
I've looked through the old posts but can't find any information on the proper torque for the front and rear spokes.  Anyone have a clue about this?   ???

Good queston!

I have re-laced a few wheels and found the guidance regarding torque interesting. Some sources have specified a torque value, others have suggested listening for musical "note".

I decided on listening to the "ping" of a wheel I thought to be factory set and set my wheel to the same "ping".  Frankly, given the difficulty of measuring the torque applied to a spoke nipple, the "ping" approach seems reasonable.

I'm with Charlie: the pitch of the note is a good test.

Buchanan spoke Co. sells a torque wrench (or they used to).  Maybe they can guide you in this area.
