Installing brake lines???
« on: June 12, 2010, 03:48:28 PM »
Ok, this is probably a dumb question but I have to ask. I'm assuming you have to line up the banjo bolts hole with the one in the hose, what is the trick to line them up??? I've been trying to line it up for hours, and still not possible.
Thanks

If I understand correctly your question, I think you maybe misunderstand how these banjo connections work.  Essentially, there is no alignment required - just insert the bolt into the connector and tighten to seal.

Ok, and now for bleeding them... I did it the way i know of, but now it seems like its just a soft/gushy feel to the brake... what should I do to make it a firm pull??

What procedure did you use to bleed?

cracking open the bleeder and gently applying the brake till the bubbles stopped and fluid started squirting out in MC...Now it's decently firm, from an hour or so of doing it.. but still not sure if it could be more firm...

Strap the brake level back or close to the handlebar so it's sqeezing the brake on and leave it overnight. Any small bubbles in the line will migrate up to the master cylinder.

An hour is in the ballpark. Surprising huh?

You can try ye olde tapping on the lines and, if your lines are swoopy (swoopy?) try straightening them out. Strap the MC to a pipe if you have to. If the MC ain't broke you'll get there. I read a couple folks had good results with brake vacuums too.

I've found a simple solution to installing new fluid/brake lines.  If you purchase a condiment container (similar to what you'd find on the table of your local dive, mustard/ketchup) from your local Walmart, you can put about a cup of fluid in add a small hose to the tip and force through an open bleeder line.  You will effectively push up any trapped air in the lines up through to your master cylinder.  It's worked fine for me everytime.

Thanks all for the help, the next thing I'm gonna try its the strapping of the lever. Iggy: My lines are SS braided from Pampadori, so there pretty much isn't any swoop, and his lines are all straight and lookin' pretty killer. I haven't had time to check the lever since last time working on it, but hopefully I'll have time today.

Oh and does anyone want to explain how the banjo bolt and the hose connections work?? I think it's amazing how simple it is and does its job perfectly. I mean looking within the hose connector it doesn't seem to have any space to have the fluid to be sucked around and into the hole.. it's crazy!! but just another dumb question from someone who has never worked on pretty much anything mechanical.. lol Thanks for helping me out again!
