cycle x boxer build / 1st sohc build

I decided to take my 77SS apart and build a hard tail bobber. This is my first experience using a honda as a doner bike and straying away from HD v twins. I look forward to the opinions and the support and I hope I can offer some as well.

Looks good. Does the comstar not fit on the back or is that just a style choice? Are you going to run the cycle X exhaust?  That is one of my favorite things they build.

The comstars fit fine but didnt want to run a 18 on the rear  and 19 front I was just looking at running a 16 on the rear and 19 on the front so thats how I have it mocked up right now in the pict. I actually ordered a 4" X 16 harley rim which I will run a 150 rear tire and I also orderd a skinny 21" front rim which I will run a 80/ 90 on the front. I think I am saving the comstars for another project hardtail I will be starting soon and the solid rear 16" wheel is for a bobber I will build for my GF onces she takes the license course I have the matching 16" front as well I think that would look cool.

Hey Rippy nice start, be aware of low ground to exhaust clearance.  Mac Drag pipes may be your best choice I chose to build my own 4-1 headers and didn't swing the primaries to the right enough so my chicken-strip on the rightside is large because of pipe to ground contact.

Also keep in mind the final drive ratio, with offset front sprocket choices limited to 16, 17, 18 and rear sprockets of 51, 48, 46, 44 and 43 you should be able to find a happy medium.  I chose a 16-44 which gives me a 2.75 and the shortest chain length.  Good luck with the build keep us posted.

Thanks for the info and I really like your build. I was going to go with a stretched tank like that I really like it alot but than I decieded on a old school look of course I may change my mind LOL...... what are you using for a rear brake???? I have my orginal 77 honda which I am going to try to use which is similar if not I was looking at DNA and checking ebay for pre 99 softail caliper

As far as offsets my 77 motor already has a 10mm offset and i am only going with a 150 on the rear so i hope i dont have to deal with chain alignment issues I am going to run a 16 43 sproket combo since I am building a harley hub I had very limited choices for rear so once I get the rear wheel ill find out

as far as x-uast goes I have a nice 4 to 1 header that I have to mount and may just run it open and make my own tip for it if not cycle x has some pretty hot stuff

I used the original OEM rear MC and chose Wilwood brake calipers front and rear.

Sorry for so long with no updates its been a long crazy hot summer.

I have installed the wheels and tires and made some custom axle adjusters and would like some input on what you guys think, 

I am running a 80/90/21 on the front Honda hub and a 150/16 on a HD hub laced to a 4 " rim, they were both bought from cycle x and they are mint ,very impressed with the job they did building them and the front hub is beautiful with the ribs machined off

I know this is an older post (not super old) but that looks awesome already. I love all the stuff cycle x offers. Im sure your boxer build will come out great

OK a few updates here hahaha

First of all I have found out that it is hard as hell for me to stop changing my mind!!!!! I have made 3 fenders and had a few different gas tanks on and a couple different seats.

My final decision came from finding out that I would have to have a state police inspection if I want to be 100% legal, The state of Ma is cracking down on bikes and it would never pass inspection as a hardtail so I figured I would try to build it to the letter of the law for #$%*s and giggles...... I have found this very hard to do and has slowed the process way down ..... I mean 48% rear tire coverage for the rear fender I mean come on LOL

So anyway here is a picture of the motor painted  wrinkle black with GET THIS chrome parts that I got free from a "harley guy" that was getting rid of boxes in his garage becuase the said Honda on them ....the parts....Valve cover, alternator cover, points cover, clutch cover,sprocket cover, etc...  were still wrapped in tissue paper 

The other is I changed from a ribbed bobber style tank to a flat bottom chopper style tank and ran into the same problem Cqyqte ran into and had to notch the rear of the tank , but it does fill up the backbone a little better.

I Have added a Twisted Choppers rear fender (very high quality) and it is cut to cover 48% of the tire, I would like it to be a little shorter but I'm rolling with it LOL...

I have also mounted my chain tensioners which are very sweet and are a throw back to my skate boarding years as a teen

I have some more stuff in the works and will update as soon as I get them done

You want a CAD drawing of the fender struts? I can send it if you want, any laser metal cutting shop can use it to cut them for ya.  You will save a ton on the cost, because most of the expense is in the CAD drawing make up.

I think I'm running with some round bar struts for now to pull off the curves I cut out of the tank....what do you think

Actually I don't have a close up of the rear directionals, but I can tell they are Arlen Ness shells that I gutted and replaced with 1 1/2" LED conversion inners.  They are driven by a Signal Dynamics Brakelight controller, as left/right signals they display as yellow X's as running lights they are bright red then when the brakes are hit they are extremely bright red LEDs.
The shells are mounted to the fenderstruts with 5/16" bolts that also hold the fender to the struts.  Now because these bolts are structural and I didn't want to run wires betwen the fender and tire because of its close proximity, I drilled the shells to allow the wires to run out of the case behind the threaded mounting bung.

Yup I would say plenty of interest at this time (Read 938 times), Dude the more info/pics you post the more interest there is. Why? Because there are some that post a beginning thread only to never update except the first few posts. People get more excited the closer to the end you get.

For what ever its worth, I think its a great build. I really like that the rear fender, I know you did that to be legal however I think it will really work. I think the struts work as well..

Great score on the chrome parts, it really makes the engine pop!

A lot of interest here and enjoying the tips from Cqyqte. I like how the motor turned out and the alt cover is very cool. Id be interested to come and see this in person when its finished. I am in Boston. Do you know Frankenstuff? Forum member also in Plainville.
