1979 Yamaha XS750 - Frame Bent Question
« on: July 06, 2009, 03:41:25 PM »
Hey All,

Ran into a deal on a bike recently.  Was drinking at the time, so I though that it was a '79 Suzuki GS750 ::).  So I read about the GS750's for the last few days just to get the pictures via e-mail showing a Yamaha XS750.

Deal is $200 - I plan on picking it up this friday.  Ran last fall (or so they say).  Has Valid Title for the bike.

So what's your opinions on this model bike.... do they have any major failings?

Thanks for the input.

Cheers, Joe

Joe, 2nd gear was a frequent problem in both the 750 & 850 triples, also with age reserve lighting units and the relay activating the stator core. luck g

Still more info on the XS750  over on the Vintage Jap Motorcycle Owners Group...  http://vjmog.com/ftopict-3796.html

Still, the problems are known and not particularly difficult to fix.  And there's just something about a triple!

I'd go for one again in a minute, especially for only $250 WITH TITLE!!

Good luck, and keep us posted.

I have an 850.

2nd gear was a snap to fix, can be done without pulling the motor. And the reserve lighting unit can be axed out with some creative wiring.

www.yamaha-triples.org

A very good resource for your cheap ass stolen thievery acquired bike.   ;D ;D ;D

That's ok. I got mine for $400 and rode it home.

Kirkn - Thats $200, thank you very much   ;)  Do you think I'm made of money or something  ;D

Havoc - Do you know the differences between the 850 and the 750?  I'm sure its spelled out somewhere, but i haven't found it yet.

Thanks for the comments.  I've been reading and bookmarking sites for the past hour or so and I've decided to go for it.  The biggest thing that I'm worried about is the fuel in the tank, I hope that it's not rusted beyond hope.

Oh, and that seat is getting burned when i get the bike home.  I swear it looks like a Goldwing seat grafted onto the original seat.

Cheers, Joe

There's quite a few.

From carbs to mufflers there's subtle differences.

The triples forum I posted will help you sort all that out.

I'm still learning myself. Only had my 850 a month.

xs750cafe.com or org or something is another cool place.

Well it says "innovative technology" right there in the picture! And it has antennae!

That's funny.   I'm picking the bike up on Friday and those "antennae" are the first thing to go.  It'll be interesting to see how much of that dirt washes off this weekend.

That is the standard model as opposed to the Special.  They bumped it up to 850 around 1980 or so and dropped the standard model.  Better looking than the Special and not as common and shaft drive too.   I would grab it in a heartbeat at that price.  The early ones, the 76 and 77 had issues that were worked out by 79.

I'm pretty sure parts are still available to upgrade transmission and there are more Hitachi carb parts available now than there were three years ago. For $200.00 with title,  even I would buy it
Its actually a nice bike when 'fixed', its just the 'fixing'
(unlike the XS500 8 valver which will never be 'nice')

The standard model lasted for the first year. 1980. and the last year 1981 was special only. But they did do small numbers of midnight specials for both 80 and 81.

Some things I have noticed are that there are less options for tuning with the Hitachi carbs than there are with the Mikuni carbs.

Brought the bike home this morning.  Dirty but its in surprisingly good shape.  No dents in the tank, new starter, and the owner was nice enough to drain the tank and the carbs the moment it was parked for storage  ;D

I almost fainted with glee when I saw that the tank was completely empty.

Only think it was missing was the RH side cover, but I just found a black and gold cover on E-bay for $25 buy-it-now.  Couldn't have had better timing  :D.

I'll probably move this to the projects forum when I start cleaning and inspecting tomorrow.

Cheers... Joe

I was real happy with the XS650,750 and 850's I had. Loved the 750 triple.

Not Yet... Decided to do a frame up rebuild.  My friend (who I gifted a '76 CB360 to) and I are currently stripping the frames.

Let me tell you.... .this is the FIRST and LAST time that I use a chemical stripper as opposed to bead blasting.  NEVER again.....

This leads into a question for those who are knowledgeable of such things.  What is the best post stripping cleaning method to clean the stripper residue from the crevices and boxed areas on the frame.  I'm worried that some residue will remain and hinder a good paint job?

I've considered taking the frame to a self wash place and pressure wash it..... Any better ideas?

Thanks, joe

ewwww....

I'd say wash it with dish soap and then use compressed air to dry it.

Maybe some brake cleaner too?

For the $$ I'd powdercoat it. Seriously tougher than paint, especially during engine install.  :D

Need some opinions here.....

So I had my first bit of welding experience with the remnants of a PO's doings... For some reason someone cut the rear right side portion.

Took it to a buddy's and he let me use his MIG welder.  Got everything lined up front to rear and used the rear cross section that bolts in to hold it in place during welding.

The damn thing is great except i didn't get it perfectly lined up on the horizontal... it's angled VERY slightly lower than the left side...

I already know that this is going to drive me crazy...... so what are my options??

1.  Cut and reweld??
2.  Heat and bend into place???

I hate cutting and re-welding if I don't have to.

thanks for the opinions.
