First time bike is running....and its back firing...help
« on: June 17, 2010, 05:30:27 AM »
My bike is finally up and running but it is back firing and popping a lot. What could be causing this? What should i check or fix?

Also the headlight seems to go dim at idle and gets brighter under open throttle. Is this normal or do I have an electrical problem?

Bike is a 72 cb500

For the popping, check your timing. Not sure what the history of the bike is, but if it has been a rebuild job, go through the normal tune-up process and make sure that everything is spot on. Check timing, valves, carbs to be clean, etc...

As for the head light, it is pretty normal on most of these old bikes to have a little bit of a dimmer light at idle. You should check your charging system just to be sure it is in good shape. Check the battery with a volt meter. Should be 12 plus volts with the bike shut off. While it is idling the generator doesn't produce much extra power. Rev the engine up to about 2-3000 RPM and see if there is a god increase in power (Should come up to 14 or so volts at the battery). If the charging system is working good, you should be all set. It would be a good plan, though, to go through all the electrical connections and make sure they are nice and clean. Old, corroded connectors reduce the amount of power than flows through them.

Do all 4 pipes get hot evenly?  What kinda pipes are you running? 4/4, 4/2, 4/1?

Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

could be timing or a carb issue. best to eliminate what you've done to the bike and make all the normal checks. spark, fuel, air

Check your idle circuit jets. Mine was backfiring and wouldn't run well at idle a few days ago when I finished my rebuild. Turned out that I hadn't pulled the idle jets and they were plugged. The passage in them is EXTREMELY TINY and you must make sure that you clean them by pulling them out and cleaning thoroughly.

Mine runs beautifully now, thanks to advice received here!

Hmm.  No mention of the basic, routine, 3000 mile tune up.  ...Or a carb sync.
