500 tank on a 550...
« on: February 09, 2006, 12:56:00 AM »

I was wondering if a CB500 tank would fit on my CB550.
I'm no too sure what year the CB500 tank is from.
But the 550 is a 1978.
Someone in my area is selling it for $100.
Any help would be great.

Thanks.
Matt.

yes, I think it will fit.  But, there will be a gap between tank and stock seat of about two inches.

As Lloyd says, the '78 had a longer seat, so unless you fit tank/seat pairs (and sort the inevitable hinge and lock misplacement) you will have a gap.

I fitted a '78 550K3 seat and tank on my 500 (the one in the avatar) - they looke great but I had to "adjust" the seat hinge as it was about 2 inches out.

Nice!

I've thought of this too, as I like the older styled tank alot better :)

Can't be that hard to move the seat 2 inches forward :D

Thanks.

In that case, would I have to cut the welds on my seat or the seat hinge on the frame to move the seat forward to accommodate the 2 inch gap?

Matt.

I cut the hinge off the seat pan and re-attached it using self tap screws.

It's not just the hinge.   The lock pin post and all the rubber bumpers between seat and frame will also be in wrong positions.  Probably best to get an older K seat, too, if the gap annoys you.  Though there might be issues with the grab bar...
