Suitability of Non US 85 GSXR 29mm Flatsides?
« on: June 14, 2010, 02:00:24 AM »
I know these were only shipped on gixxers outside of the US, but I'm hoping someone can advise whether these would be a good performance carb for my 836?

They're advertised as having 34mm engine side spigot and 29mm venturi. I've tracked them down as coming off 85 GSXR models only (Japan, Aus, Europe).

Can I use the Dynoman manifold rubbers, afaik all Suzuki's have the same spacing from 79 through to 88, so I'd expect that given the spigot od is the same as the VM29, that these should bolt straight on using the Dynoman rubbers.

What challenges might lie ahead with throttle cable, anyone got any tips?
One last question, are these early RS model or something else?

Those carbs are designed for a bike with intakes that are angled significantly up.  How well do you think the "plumbing" is going to work with the carbs sitting level on a SOHC??

As an owner of different air-oil GSXR's including first series with flat slides, I can tell you they werent angled much at all, not sure where you are getting that info from. cant see a problem with that.

Carb spacing might be the bigger problem though and re-racking them will be a mini project of sorts. but who knows, migth work as is.

wouldnt use them for street work though. they were very on-off even on the original GSXR, my bike became so much better and drivable when I fitted it with 38mm(or was it 36? cant remember now)  CV's from the 90-91 model.

Looking at the float bowls but perhaps there is another reason for the angle of the bowl to carb body joint. . . .

Later on; here's a pic

Float bowl to carb body seam looks pretty level in this pic.  This is not to say that mounting these carbs straight off the head like in a 750 would cause them not to function but they certainly are significantly upswept in the stock setup (IMHO) and I wonder how well they would work at the non stock angle.

Stock carbs on my 78 750 for comparison

OK, OK, we are both right, or sort of... :) the gsxr carbs are pure side draft, 90 degs in relationship to the cyl block at least, their tilt angle comes from the fact that the cyl block itself is tilted.

cant remember the figure but I think that the block cyl was tilted by some 10 degs.

so its true that the slanted carb bowl line was meant to be horizontal, but when you think about all the braking/accelelration
that goes on, the sealing is not really depending on the line being horizontal.

I for one, have mounted both VM's (your type of carbs) and CR's at more than 10 degrees of overall tilt without problems (see my 10 degrees downdraft project thread), so that's why I was saying it will not be an issue, at least IMHO/experience.

Thanks guys, the big problem I see is hooking up the cable. As you can see it pulls almost vertically as the GSXR has much greater clearance between the tank and the carbs and obviously routes the cable over the top.

I think I'll pass on these, and keep looking for something that's been proven to work like VM28's from a K1.

Those are side draft carbs
I tried to use a set on an early GS but switched to current flat slides
but they will work or should work with your 836

I have tried to fit a set of gsx400 flatside carbs (33mm). The spacing is spot on for a 750 but they are just to big to fit the stock carbboots.
