Buying an out of state bike in California?
« on: July 10, 2010, 02:15:18 PM »
Anybody ever bought a non-California bike and transferred it to a California title? Nightmare? Not that hard? Any info is appreciated.

Simple. I've done it four times now and used these folks in San Diego. The title and plates just show up in the mail once you pay their somewhat large fee. Worth not having the hassle though.

Awesome, thanks for the info. What's a "somewhat large fee", if you don't mind me asking?

I believe a hundred and a half covered everything.

I believe a hundred and a half covered everything.

Wait, if I have the title in hand is this still necessary?

Is what necessary?
If you have a title, you will still need to go to the DMV, get your bike inspected, yadayadayada - or you can pay someone else to do it. When I did mine, I didn't have the bikes yet, just photos of the vin numbers.

Sorry I thought this might have to do with not having a title but just a bill of sale.

Other than making sure numbers match etc and dealing with the lines it shouldn't be too big a problem hitting the ole DMV right???  ;D

Right - everything's gotta work though - blinkers, lights, horn.

Transferring mine was easy, after the initial line wait, the inspection and paperwork took 10 minutes.  I think the cost was like $20 for CA title and $68 for registration.  The inspection line outside is usually empty.  Just know where your VINs are and have everything work, like mycb750k6 said.

Good to know. For some reason I thought it was like trying to bring Cuban cigars into the country or something.
