second gear missing teeth
« on: February 06, 2006, 04:12:50 PM »
I was sneaking in a day of riding last week on my '77 cb750k, not often you get to ride in wisconsin in January, and broke a few teeth off of my second gear. Ive got a few questions, will the gears out of an 1980 cb750k fit(there is a set on Ebay that closes in a few hours), how hard is it to change it out, and is there anything I should look for when I have it apart?

I do not think they would fit. Thees are two different engines the 80 is DOHC.I have a 70 and an 81 and I believe the DOHC is wider.Dannie

Nope. Different animals.
See SOHC4shop.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.

I've got some spare 550 gears, I don't know if one of those would work.

Take the engine apart a see what other damage you have…….. you may find it cheaper to find another engine.

What exactly happened? Second gear may only be part of the problem!

Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Its mating gear, its shift fork or dogs, and anything else the broken tooth may have hit on its way down to the pan. Best get that engine torn down and have a look- hate to see you buy one gear from DSS and find out you need a handful of other things. Used 750 engines can be found for not-too-much still, keep your eyes open.
Also, as much as some here may hate the place, good deals can be found by hitting up the guys over at http://www.hondachopper.com . They're dedicated solely to the SOHC CB750's, and some have collected their own shrines of spares for just such an occasion. One member just picked up a spare engine for $100, not a bad deal considering all the extra bits you get besides the gear(s) you need now.
