So I guess I should introduce myself

I've been trolling the boards for a few months now and have already been helped a ton by you guys. Just wanted to say thanks for all the help, and I'm stoked to have found such an informative place for all my questions. Last night I finally got my bike running again after a few issues that came up back to back. Cleaned it up and snapped a few pics tonight. Still having a charging problem, but hoping a new stator will fix that. My first bike, 76 cb550 F. I put on new rear suspension, new pod filters, new throttle cables, clutch cable, starter switch assembly, and bars.  I'm planning on a new seat and I'll probably do something with the taillight. I want to switch up the exhaust a bit, and re-chrome the fenders. Plan on keeping it fairly stock, just cleaning it up, making it reliable, with a few subtle changes here and there. Anyway, here she is...

Welcome - nice lookin' 550F! I have one too, except in blue.
Looks real clean, is the seat cover ripped? If you like the seat, you could easily just replace the cover.

Looks nice.  I like the color and what you've done to it.  Clean.  Are those aluminum rims?  For some reason they look different to me.

yeah the cover is ripped... Was kinda debating going with a stock cover, or maybe a "brat-style" seat cover.

well when I bought the bike the battery it had was nearly dead, so I bought a brand new one. I rode it for about a month, then one day it just wouldn't start. I took the battery back to Honda, they put it on their charger, called me two hours later and asked what I did to the battery. They said it was completely dead and wouldn't charge at all.

I kinda wondered if the battery was maybe defective, but being that its an old bike, I thought maybe something was drawing on the battery when it was off. However, I did a light test and it seemed ok.

So I'm kinda taking a guess, but I figured maybe the stator went out?


Soichiro: as far as I know the rims are stock. The back is a 16" though. I think the lighting somehow made them look a bit dull. That or they could use a wipe.

Nice bike!  ;D Welcome to the forum. Try this diagram. It is easy to follow and will help you figure out what part of your system is acting up without replacing everything. Well, unless everything needs replacing that is. :o  :P  It works for pretty much all of our bikes.

Not very likely...

field coil? does anything come to mind that would completely kill a battery.

How about try the pdf I posted, eh? It will narrow it down to what is wrong and quickly.

The stator is the least likely of the culprits. More likely your regulator/rectifier or rotor. Or a short somewhere draining it. Many people catch a short in their headlight bucket wiring (that whole rats nest in there) or in the ignition switch. (key switch)

There is more to a charging system than a stator and a field; regulator, rectifier, wiring...

Thanks for that link Mickey. Looks like it will help alot. Electrical problems are definitely not my strong point. I still need to get a multimeter. Can I pick one up at any auto shop? what should i pay?

that reminds me, I found a brown wire in my headlight bucket. Do you know if it's supposed to be hooked to anything?

There was also a green one under my tank, but I read somewhere that one is supposed to be there. Can you confirm if that's the case?

Models for other areas (like Europe) than yours have an extra 4W position light fitted in the headlight reflector. We can switch between 4 Watts position light, 55 Watts or 60 Watts High Beam. The little position light also comes on in Parkmode, together with the taillight. Honda didn't think it was worth the trouble of making a different wire harnass.

Just an FYI: those side covers can be hard to come by [and not available from Honda].
If you need one or two, start looking now.
