electrical issues....
« on: February 09, 2006, 07:42:15 PM »
I have just started noticing that my blinkers (which I have replaced with an electronic blinker) have started slowing down and stopping while I am idling...

and my bike will often run suddenly very rich right off idle (idle is fine) then surge forward in a rush after a few moments...
I just rechecked my timing and dwell and they are fine (dwell set at 40 degrees (4 cyl scale)

Could these symtpoms be caused by a weak battery?

IT seems like there is not enough power until the there are enough revs to supplement it...

This is not an "all the time" scenario" it it just starting to happen several times during a ride over the last couple weeks.

this is not a normal thing for my bike it is usually very spot on and eager to run.

IS this enough info to be able to make sense of what's happenning?

thanks,

Adam

Yep. Sounds like the battery voltage is dropping below 10.0 volts while idling. This makes the coil's spark weak, which makes the symptoms you describe.

The alternators only make about 200 watts while idling, which is barely enough to run the ignition. If lights are used, the voltage falls while idling. It's supposed to "fill it back up" while above 2000 RPM.

Also, check your battery cables where they connect to the battery: they could be dirty with a white corrosion. This will resist the current flow into the battery from the alternator, slowing the charging process.
