why does the float still stick!
« on: February 08, 2006, 03:10:12 PM »
installed new carb kits in the ex500carbs (let's just pretend they are sohc4 for now)

i thought i had it peg'd as the carb that was sticking had a bum float pin (you know the thingy that attaches to the float and plugs the fuelflow coming into the carb.  it has a spring loaded cylinder that helps to push the stopper down in the hole.  that spring loaded doodad was stuck.

so, new float pins later and it's still letting gas into the carb... my only thought is it's not making a seal.  is there something else i'm missing?

yes... i'm sure the float is not working properly as gas runs out of the carbs when the fuel is on and the bike runs with the gas off...

yay! for it finally running at least tho.  right?

Is it running out of all, or multiple carbs? I could see perhaps on of the float valves not seating if the seat is chewed up, or something. Are the float heights correct? Just thoughts...

Is the float sinking?  Maybe the needle is hanging up in its travel up and down.  Float level too high and it will go out the overflow before the float shuts off the gas.  (I have a feeling you know that because you know your way around bikes).

ok... float height was set when i put the carbs in the bike... the same carb did stick on me before i got height set but, the tang was bent way to far and that was the culprit.

got the float height set... even shook them around to mimic riding... they did not overflow.

the seat that the pin sits in seems to look ok.

there doesn't seem to be any gas inside the floats that i've noticed.

will get some pics soon... cleaned it up, new race pipes from Brazil, new batt, plugs, AND CARB KITS THAT AREN'T WORKING!

I had a crack in a overflow tube on my bike, thought it was a stuck float, you might want to check this. Dannie

like i said... pretty sure its the right side carb float sticking.  it's not instant either... every time it's stuck, it takes a few minutes to occur  then it just continues to overflow.

anyone have experience taking in or out pressed fittings like a jet needle seat?  but, perhaps the needle is hanging up in its movement... experience remedying that?

Does it make a difference if the bike is on the side stand or center stand?

Does it leak while driving around? or just stationary.  I'm not sure what your carbs look like inside.  But check where the float pivots meet the posts where the pins are.  Are they smooth?  Any drag when you side load the float?

Having said that, Are your float valves rubber tipped or metal.  Rubber is a bit more forgiving of seat imperfections.  Metal tipped ones, less so.  Either the seat is not well matched, or perhaps the vibration will eventually wear in the mating surface.

Good luck!

Ditto on Dannie's reply. I couldn't figure out why the gas kept coming out the overflow tube until a wise, old mechanic said to take the float bowl off, plug one end of the tube with my finger and try to blow throught the other end. Sure enough the tube was cracked.
Easy check, simple solution. Hope this helps.
Cliff.

check out the shiny new bits tho!   ;D

hard to believe that elizabeth will be able to be in the "rusted nuts" cuz this bike is very soon to be 20 years old... the first year of production and they are still being produced as the ninja500 probably still the same boring old gpz500 for those of you in the "different" know.
