1977 honda cb400 super sport questions
« on: June 15, 2010, 11:09:39 PM »
I just picked up a 77' cb400 super sport. The guy I bought it from didn't know much about it and it hasn't been serviced unless something was wrong for the last 2yrs. I've been going through it and slowly trying to get it to run as good as possible.

Question #1
I have the carbs off and have cleaned them. I am considering switching the stock airbox out for K&N air pod filters. I know I have to rejett the carbs, but how do I know which jets to get for it? Most people seem to recommend just going for it, will I get myself into a world of trouble doing this? Will I be able to properly adjust the carbs after installing the air pods with a manometer, or will I need to do more than just that?

Question #2
My stock exhaust pipe has a rust hole in it. I was thinking of buying a universal turn out muffler from helix racing, has anyone had any experience with these?

Question #3
The electric starter button is missing/broken. I removed the starter, can I also remove the solenoid? The solenoid is the only thing left plugged into the + on the battery. What should I use to plug the hole where the starter used to be?

Apart from appearance, there is nothing to recommend changing from the stock air box to K&N pods. I would never do it.

I would not put any aftermarket airbox parts and fool around rejetting it. You are headed for a headache.
To fill the hole where the starter was you could put the starter back in it....
The electric start button switch can still be purchased for about $100.

It is important to know that the starter switch powers your headlight and running lights. You likely have had trouble getting the headlight to work since the starter button is broken/removed.

Not even from appearance. I mean, who wants "looks" that show you've choosen something foolish?
A stock 400 breathes perfectly.
