Do you guys think the patch is really necessary if you are running a tube? I'm resistant to using a patch unless the hole is substantial. However, at that point, I think a new tire is in order. The reason I am against the patch is because it really doesn't do anything for a tubed tire. The rubber surrounding the hole will squeeze back into place, and will form a solid barrier against contamination. Plus, a patch would cause the system to be out of balance, requiring additional weights to be added (minor, but still important).
The only caveat is if you ride in the rain much, in which case I would definitely patch. In that situation, you would want to ensure water ingestion is limited so that the rim does not rust.
