I had that problem also on my K8. The amount of play surprised me. So I got a new front sprocket from Honda. A bit of the play went away. This year I swapped my engine and have almost no play in the front sprocket so I'm concluding that it was the output shaft that was worn.

Hard to judge from a description how much play you have and whether it is too much, but some is normal, it shouldn't be fixed and tight with no movement. It allows the sprocket to 'follow' some lateral movement of the chain.

Maybe I replied too quickly. The "play" I was experiencing was radial. If I took the front sprocket and tried to turn it forward and backward in the direction it turns, the play was that way (could be described as horizontal, but in the forward-backward way, not side to side horizontal). I just went to the old engine that I pulled out and wiggled the (less than 1000 km from new) sprocket. It is as I described but maybe two to three millimeters and almost no play if I try to twist it side to side (as Bob suggested to help it follow the chain). It is definitely NOT locked down tight. I think the new engine's sprocket is more the way it should be but I am fairly new to this. I do remember thinking that it was excessive, and I still do.

I have a similar issue with my CB550.  Just put the engine back together and installed a new countershaft sprocket.  There's some play there, maybe 1mm.  It was months ago that I took the bike apart and I was not in the mood to put the old sprocket back on to compare.

Sounds like this is kind of a normal thing and maybe I don't need to worry about it!

Seems to be a problem on 78 750s.. there is one here in town that wore quite badly.
