F2 / F3 carb bowl overflow tube
« on: June 16, 2010, 11:41:21 AM »
Had the carbs off today for a clean. Noticed that brass overflow tube in #1  carb bowl is missing and hole where it should sit is filled with some sort of liquid metal type putty. This has I suppose been done in the past for a split tube or something.
The bike is a good runner but I have never been 100% happy with the carburation.
Does the tube also act as balance line as well as an overflow?
Question is, assuming float height is ok and fuel level is correct will the lack of this tube cause any running issues? Do I need a replacement bowl?

Thanks guys
Andy

The tube also allows air to get in.........get a replacement bowl to keep all carbs balanced regarding vacuum and fuel levels.

FWIW [?]

The mechanic who did the carbs on my '77 CB550F said split overflow tubes can be successfully rerpaired using shrink tubing. He has been repairing motorcycles for many years and has a lot of repeat business. He said he has done this many times and never had one fail.

I tend to believe him, though I've never tried it.

Some of the PD carbs have a separate bowl vent hose that supplies all the float chambers.  Some do not, and rely on the overflow tubes not being blocked for proper bowl venting.  There is still a balance passageway between carbs regardless.  So, it should still be drivable with one overflow tube blocked, whether you have the separate vent line or not.

However, I don't know why you wouldn't want to correct an obviously improper repair?

Further, the overflow serves to dump fuel out of the carb if the float valve sticks open.  With it plugged, the fuel level rises and fills the intake/cylinder, and washes the oil off the rings, then dilutes the oil supply.  If the overflowing gas doesn't go toward the cylinder, then it fills the filter box, where a carb backfire can set it ablaze.  Maybe you'll be lucky and this will never happen?

Oh TwoTired,
But I do want to correct things. May not be an easy fix on the bowl itself due to the metal filler but I may be able to come up with something. The other option I suppose will be to look around for a replacement bowl.

Anyone got one available?

Certainly the easiest fix is a replacement bowl.  I'd go for that.
