that mito doesn't look like fun to work on!!!  cool bikes though, gotta love seeing 81 bhp out of a 400 and 130 BPH :o :o :o :o out of a 500!!!

I wonder what BPH my 970 Turbo at 20 lbs of boost makes ?  All i know is it is one scary ride on the big end !  :o  :D :D

                TURBO'S RULE !!!   ;) ;D      P.S.  I need to get my F.B. finned side covers on !    ::)

Hi all,  Did a quick search for Honda 400/4 turbo and I'm here,  Memories come flooding back from a time when I was young and the bike's I had, from my First Honda C102 to my last Hayabusa, and tons of bikes in between.
Nice to see some one else obrut'ed a 400/4, I did one in about 81/82/83, took time to get it to work with all the moddin of the engine and frame to get it right'ish.

But one problem I had the same as Ivan was the clutch,  just could not get it to take the power, with a locked up clutch it once made 103 BHP before blowing up on a dyno and cooking us all in oil, any way building these things is a long and winded story so if I can find some pic's I'll post some and I can see what think of what I ended up with.

Hi Sam, No never got raced I looked into it at the time but they would not let Turbo bikes race at the time, not circuit racing any way.  I fitted a big turbo on it, it did not make boost until 8500rpm and dropped out of boost at 8000 so if you needed power at 80mph you had to cog it down two gears,  it revved to 15000+rpm,  there were lots of engine mod's,welded crank, modified c/head, camshaft timings, pistons, con rods etc, 8.25 to 1 comp,  416 cc,  I ran 5 psi boost most of the time but would turn it up to 8psi now and again but the clutch just could not take it, tried to fix it but with out going to a dry setup there was no easy way.
I built it to thrash and not brake and it go plenty of thrashing I can tell you, top speed was 145+ and it ran lower gearing because it was built to rev to 15000rpm , plus 4 teeth on the back sprocket 1 of the front. Some frame mod's were mono shock fully adjustable A frame to the STD swing arm, triple disk's, 3 hollow spoke mag wheels, reshaped P/tank etc.
It did not cost that much to build after getting the turbo and wheels as all the mod's and building I did my self, but it cost me £380 for new nuts, bolts, axles etc. the hardest thing was fitting a full size battery to it because of the R/shock.
I only broke it once when it ran out of petrol at 135 just as I was going to change into top gear, ( forgot to put it on reserve ) it holed two pistons damaged both others, blown head gasket, bottom barrel totally out,  turned all the oil seals inside out, and smoked out the M1 for 1/2 a mile. And after buying a gallon of oil I smoked out Nottingham and rode it home from the M1. I rebuilt it in a couple of days and it was back to thrashing it for braking.
I sold it after about 3 years (35,000 miles) with the intention of building another 400/4 turbo even better but never did, I replaced the Cyc Head, Camshaft, and pistons before I sold it, I kept them for about ten years before dumping them when moving house.

It was hard to get the turbo to boost in 1st gear but once in 2nd it was on it's way, the more it revved the better it felt and the faster you went the better it got. it stopped good, handled OK, and looked OKish.  At 90mph in top it had zero boost and would do 60+mpg.

Sounds like it was a lot of fun, bet it gave a few riders of bigger bikes a scare or two. ;D ;D ;D ;D
When I said did you race it, I meant DRAG RACING, I forgot there were other types of racing. ;D ;D ;D ;D

Hi Sam,  It was no good at getting of the mark,  a std 400/4 would beat it to 50mph,  1st gear was to short and changing gear with the turbo at full boost had to be done clutchless in any gear or it would fry it,  Clutch basket had the cush drive removed and nylon inserts in there place with hard 'O' rings fitted just to give it some cush, tried many after market clutch plates but the std Honda were best. with a bit of work on the clutch pressure plate and centre drive and grinding the steals thinner I got two more plates in and heaver springs, but it was still the weak link. It was not a noisy bike at all even though the exhaust was not baffled , when riding with my mate's they said they could hear me behind them then it would go quiet they would hear the turbo starting to whistle then they ducked as I went flying past, lots of fun.
I see you have some 60's Honda's, I started really building my own bike's with the CB72/77  (250/305) in late 69,  my best build was a CB72 Read Titan, ended up with bore and stroke of 72x50 (std 54x54) using concentric crank pins, that was very fast in it's day and not much could beat it on the road. I'll shut up now as I could reminisce all day.

Wow....this thread is right up my alley!  I'm very impressed at both bikes!  Makes me feel a little less out to lunch about my turbo 350 goals.

Wake this from the dead.... Did either of you guys ever figure out how to make the clutch survive the abuse?   What was done for the clutch on your cb500 motor?

If you built another rendition today, what would you do differently?  Any other areas you would suggest a guy focus his attention when building a turbo 350/400?

Thanks!

hi chap , well on mine i had packed out the clutch springs with as many washers i could fit in and still have a clutch that worked ,this increased spring pressure i would estimate about 50 %. it let go completely on the dyno at around 85 bhp ,that ws only 8500 rpm . i had ported the head ,and it has a yosh 450 big bore kit .

i found this to be very reliable ...the original honda pistons appeared to have an aversion to 13k rpm ,and would fire their bits of piston ring out of the exhaust ,having eaten thier way past the piston .

bear in mind though ,  it was running too lean for 13 psi boost ,and i rode it like that for 10k miles despatch riding ,so it does seem to have good endurance .

the petrol tank fuel tap is way too small  and needs to be a lot bigger .

turbo wise , im happy with the ihi rhb5/1 , i specced it in 1979/80 ,and ordered it specially  for the design .
when it arrived it had a P7 turine housing ,and this gave boost at 7200 rpm . i ordered a special p5 housing ,and gives boost at 5200 i think ,and it was fine . this turbo only has a little 30mm odd inlet so its not very big at all.

if i did it again i would run a blow through setup with cv carbs like the 500 , and i would use an intercooler .

robert
