78 Hawk II - weird fork seal
« on: June 17, 2010, 04:46:26 PM »
While disassembling the front forks, I had trouble removed the old fork seal. Both the shop manuals I have make it look easy - use a screw driver to lever the old seal out. The seal does not want to budge, and I think there is metal in it. Tearing away some of the rubber definitely reveals some metal. It does not look like it could be an extra lip since it's integrated with the seal, and the replacement seal would not fit if it were an extra lip. Something seems weird. Here is a picture.

Yes, there is a metal ring embedded in the seal. Pry the seal out by placing the screwdriver under the metal part.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!
