CAM CHAIN Removal Question??
« on: June 19, 2010, 07:45:35 AM »
'77 CB550K. I am about to replace the cylinder head gaskets. I have the rocker cover off, exhaust off, carbs off. I am trying to get the cam chain off the sprocket and am having no luck. It is way too tight. I am kinda confused on the cam chain tensioner, I loosen the nut, turn the screw to the right (clockwise) (90degrees) retighten nut, and still can't get the chain off the sprocket. I removed the two bolts on the sprocket and slid to the left just like the manual says.

Does anyone have any suggestions???? I don't want to break anything, but need to get the chain off the sprocket.

Remove the cam chain tensioner from the engine. It's just three bolts and pulls right out, That should give you the slack you need to remove the chain, If it doesn't then you chain is probably binding. Rattle it and move it backward and forward a bit to loosen it up.
