Help! Electronic tach
« on: June 19, 2010, 10:25:28 AM »
After researching several threads here on electronic tachs, I picked up a gauge assembly from a Ninja 500. It's a dual coil non-waste spark, so I figured it would work for me.

I ripped it apart, put the guts in my stock gauge bucket, and wired up the + and -, then connected the post labelled "ign" to the yellow ignition wire.

Here's what I see:

above a certain RPM it drops down to zero. Any ideas why?

Some electronic ignitions work opposite to points, the system switches positive power to the coils whereas ours switch the ground. If that's what this expects then it may get confused. CDI ignition also works differently, sending a short voltage pulse to cause a spark rather than the (relatively) long period of sustained coil power during the points closed time, even longer with a Dyna S or equivalent EI. A tach for a twin with separate coils will read double RPM if working correctly on a wasted spark dual fire system.

Swap the - and  the + and see if that works for you.. I believe Bodi is correct where the tach is concerned.
