Carb sync port screw
« on: June 16, 2010, 08:33:44 PM »
Ok.  I synced the carbs earlier today.  Everything was working great.  Unhooked the vaccuum gauges and took it for a test ride.  Only running on 3 cylinders now.  I started getting super frustrated until it dawns on me a minute ago.  I only remember putting 3 of the sync port screws back in.  Would this be my problem, and if so, where could I find a new screw (its probably on the highway somewhere)  Or possibly a way of temporarily plugging the hole until I could get the replacement?  I want to ride this thing damnit! So close! :D

Thanks,
Bill

I've had good luck (twice) by taking crappy screws off my CB750 (one was the speedo screw and another mounting bolt) to the autoparts store and they matched them.  Only cost a couple of bucks and worth the trip versus buying the screws online somewhere.  If you are unsure of the thread count, some stores have thread guages, but ALL Home Depot and Lowes have them, so you can get it gauged there.

Good luck!

I've had great luck getting hard to find hardware at Ace Hardware stores.  The Ace stores that cater to contractors are far and away the best ones for having large hardware selections.

Thanks guys.  I'll stop by the hardware store after work tomorrow.   In the mean time, would I be able to get away with covering the hole with a little piece of duct tape?  I kinda want to ride to work tomorrow since it is going to be nice out.

If the tape comes off, then you'll run lean, which can really burn up a piston quickly.  If the tape gets sucked in, then you might get some poor valve sealing, which could lead to a few issues.  I'd come up with a better option (considering the tape won't like the high heat much), or just wait to get a screw that fits.

How was the Fall salmon run last year?  I used to hit the beaches in Kenosha a lot when I lived in Champaign, IL.  I remember catching some amazing fish on those beaches... a couple lightning strikes too!

If you can not find one I bet if you post a note on the "wanted" section someone will have an extra in their carb parts bin. Or could try your dealer.

Gently screw a plastic golf tee in there and ride until you can get the right screw.
