New eBay scam
« on: February 09, 2006, 11:26:20 AM »
I've been doing some buying on eBay lately and I got a new-to-me scam email this morning. Some prick sent me a semi-offical looking eBay email berating me for not paying for the "item I bought at auction" on Dec 29, and demanding imediate payment. Said I haven't been returning his emails, he would report me to eBay admins, blah blah blah. Deal is, I was on vacation over the holidays and hadn't been near a 'puter for several days before or after the 29th. Thought I'd throw this out there so someone who has been doing a lot of buying doesn't make the mistake of thinking he didn't pay for something.

Same thing happened to me.  At first glance, I thought someone had hijacked my ebay account since I haven't used it in a long while, but a closer look at the link URL (for real -not what displays) showed me that this was going to send me to some server listed only by IP address and was obviously just another phishing scam.

NEVER EVER CLICK ON ANYTHING IN THESE Some even execute a .exe from a remote website that will hijack your machine.

These are attempts to gain access to your account. If you have clicked on anything in these - CHANGE YOUR PASS WORD PRONTO. Always forward these to spoof@ebay.com

We get about 10 of these a day  >:( :-\

Same goes for paypal stuff - forward to spoof@paypal.com

Quickest way to find a fake is hover (DONT CLICK) your cursor over any link and look in the lower left corner and it will show the address. First thing to look for is that fact that it does not come back to http://www.ebay.com/blahblahblah. Another thing is the fonts are almost always goofy in these. They are close but NOT THE SAME.

Tell me no one has clicked on this stuff......... :-[

Glenn- At first I thought my account was comprimised also. Then I realized that it didn't contain my username anywhere, and it sure as hell would have if they had it.

CBJ- I'm going to forward it as soon as I post this.

El Cheapo- Nope, I never click those. Thx for the eBay address. Saved me having to look it up.

There is another scam which goes along similar lines, you get an email from a supposed ebayer, asking about the DVD (or some such item) you are returning and would you contact them about it,

Can't see how this one works, and I may be talking out of the top of my head.
I just report everything to ebay

I've gotten both of them also.  Lately I've been pretty busy stocking up on stuff for my CB175 rebuild.  I did the hover-thing looking for a return address when I got it because it just seemed fishy.  If you're using Outlook, be extra careful because the 'preview' mode actually opens up the e-mail.  Sometimes just opening it up will allow them to realize it is a live address, thus allowing a more focused attack list.

I always try to encourage folks to turn preview off, including my own sister. She doesn't quite get it yet, I get the "how can it be opened, I didn't click on it."  :(

I have left my preview on for many years and had the occasional problem. But nothing with my laptop. This thing is locked up tighter than a pitbulls jaw. ;D

Not boasting, as that is when you get nailed. I use Norton 2005 Internet Security/Anti-Virus, Lavasoft Add- aware personal, and the Microsoft anti spyware thingy. So far so good. Not infallible but works well.

Now the dark side:

Of course mine is also set to first record the attacking IP # (so I can chase down the hosting service later and tell them why their machines are dead and tell them they will need to use a service to recover the hard drive(s) without the boot sector to get back on line) and then kill a server if it attacks my machine. This essentially turns a server into a black screen even it is one of those huge IBM rack servers. And yes it sneaks right by complex Cisco routers and firewalls. To date nothing stops it and it is not available for research or purchase. It leaves no trace. This kills the boot sector of the attacking harddrive. And then turns off the wireless connection on my laptop and does a full scan and chase the dirty bugger down and get rid of it. When it is all done it gives me a confirmed IP# and confirmed kill along with server resolution names and who is registered to it. This is a script left over from my hacking days. I have been into systems I can not even type for obvious reasons. This makes it impossible for the server to restart. It does leave all the files intact, it just kills the boot sector info on the harddrive. This script is also capable of chasing down the source even if the IP# origin is being forwarded. This is done to make it look like a different IP#. Like a proxy number. Really pisses them off when you kill off a one Terabyte drive. Yes this is akin to a shotgun strung to the door behind it but it works well. To date I have only killed 10 servers. But I am 10 for 10. Yes there are hundreds of hours of work into this so my machine would not kill my ISP or other legitimate sites. I have never killed a server unintentionally yet. ;D

To think, I can't get a job doing this. :-[

There are days and nights I remember turning down a lost maiden at the door of my hotel room WITH BEER who has found the wrong address and was willing to PARTY while hacking the crap out of some server that was classified, oops did I say that? Ok I am a bit of a closet nerd. Funny things can happen when you can type 150WPM.  ;D

For those who are probably pissed off at me now. I have driven a truck into a small building hosting attacking servers. MAN THAT MADE A MESS.

For reference I do chase down hackers now. So I have come back from the dark side.  ;D ;D

I have a  vow to break the fingers of any hacker I encounter  ;D

FOR REFERENCE- I HAVE NEVER GENERATED BS EMAIL ATTACKS TO REGULAR JOES

Phishing is for idiots who do not understand just how servers and all the goods work. If you can not go at it raw on any server then they should pick a different hobby. For my next gag I might hack their server and make their server attack them when the attempt to access the control panel.

Knowledge is dangerous. ;D

This is problably about the best way out there to make sure stuff is legit. I think you can turn off the send email thingy in the messages. Yes, then you have to go into your account to check it, but then you know for fact that anything sent to you via email is striaght out BS.

I was getting a lot of these - strange messages from buyers/sellers - always checked my account to see if the message was in there.

More recently I get them from PayPal telling me they are going to close or want to verify my account - same process as above - just log onto your account and see whats in there.

Basically make it good practice to distrust emails - don't follow links from them unless you are 150% sure it's from someone you know personally, even then you could get caught - be suspicious, it's not paranoia when they ARE out to get you.

Once  a week I get the "you are overdue and your account will be closed" email, which is a scam and if you look closely you will always spot a typo somewhere. I have never clicked on anything, but I have looked at the emails!! hopefully no damage done!! I also get a lot of supposed ebay emails about items I have not bid on, and when I check the item number thye do not exist??
I have reported things to ebay before and have never received any responses!!

Even when it is a pain in the back, I insert my password everytime both in eBay and Paypal. I don't want cookies on the computer that can be stolen. Also with the e-mail.

I did forward that BS email on to eBay. Got back a canned reply saying they would investigate, thanking me, etc. I doubt I'll hear more about it.

You never do hear back from them, but I can tell you - they do look into ALL of them. They have a complete security staff in which chasing these down is all they do.

Cheapo, if you really do have a way to kill a server regardless of any security measures and you wrote it yourself, you could get a job with those skills. An extremely well paid job.

Don't I wish. The jobs protecting and attacking of computers are not just money grubbing driven, they are political. >:( Ever notice when  some big software company does a big lay off there are more viruses in the wild? #$%* you just would not imagine. Rehire is based on who has code for what.

Besides, the killing off of what I have set up would take serious AI programing intervention agent which is not available to civilians yet. The AI would have to be human in troubleshooting but 100 times as fast. Sort of self aware. Not some crap from the Pandoras Bot string.

Might I add I do my best work a little tipsy. No drinking in the house ;D no smoking in the house  >:( not even in the office of Anubis Cycle  >:(  When hard at work I drink and smoke excessively. Wives do have control. When I come back, I will be woman and have some poor sucker under my thumb.  ;D

And I will shake my "junk" to get money out of the fools  ;D

If coming back would be a fact I would be a stacked slut ;D

Crack ECM codes? What do you mean? All MIL Lamp codes are readily available as a list for what they are and all OBDII readers easily read them.  ???
