550 bobber attempt

Well been looking around here for a week since I picked up my 1976 cb550. It was a find on craigslist about 15 min from my house. Got it for $900. Not sure if thats good or bad but after seeing some Jap Bobbers it's what I wanted.

Plans are to hardtail it with most of the other bobber stuff. Figure it out as I go  I guess.

Here she is the way I got her. Started with battery and kicker so I guess thats a good start.




Here she is at the end of day 1


I'll try to keep this updated and hopefully I can get some help from you all if I need it

why did you cut the engine crade pipes???

Now your engine alignment points are WAY off.

Don't forget to put slugs in the pipes to ensure strong welds.

Why did I cut the pipes? I don't know! Looked like thats what I needed to do.
I'm going to bolt the motor back in to make sure it all lines up before It gets welded.
I got slugs for the connections.
Again this is my first attempt at choppin up a bike I'm sure it will have plenty of .......character  lol

Thru the motor back in and lined  up everything. It was all crooked without it in.
Friend of mine is turning down some slugs for the tail. I have  bigger tail diameter than the original frame diameter. He's going to take 1/8" to a 1/4" off of half to get it to fit in original frame

Take some angle iron and brace up the frame. That way it will be easier to locate your motor mounts. Also you could leave the swing arm in to make sure the rear is square and the trail is good. I left my swing arm in until the rear end was completely welded in. Then just cut it out. Might save you the head ache of squaring things up later on. Good luck. should be fun

What's your new trail measurement now ? Looks like it'll be more than 6"...it might be a bit hard to steer at low speed.

Well I finaly got it to a spot where I could take it off the lift and roll it around. Fail!!! Yea the trail is way to long the front just flops when you turn it. The tail is also to low which don't help with the trail. I need to chop the tail off and restart. Another part that doesn't help is I found out at some point the front of the frame was lengthened to add 4" and the forks extended to give it a chopper look, that don't help with the trail problem either. Now the solution? I found a member here not to far away that had the same frame properly hartailed and I picked it up and I'm on the right track now. I'll have to post up new pics of it.
I do have a good part bike now

With respect to your sight gauge, aren't you concerned that "someone" may give it a yank.  I have visions of fuel spurting out over a hot engine.

Well the electronics are kind of just thrown in the container. I did how ever coat the inside with several layers of liquid tape. I drilled holes in the side and used rubber grommets so the wires would not rub. Not sure if it's going to get to warm in it or not but I see lots of guys putting them in oil tanks.  Most of the wiring on this bike is gone. I keep all the main stuff like the regulator, solenoid , fuse box ect. Snipped all the wires I didn't need and ran new with connectors in case I needed to take it all apart. I then shrink tubed all the exposed stuff. The 3 switches are kill, headlight and starter. They are just toggle switches

I am going to have to put something on it I was putting it up on the trailer today and bumpped it good and got some gas on me. I can barely pull the hose off but bump it and it leaks a bit >:(

A bit more done

chain tensioner to take up slack do to rear whell being fixed b/c of drum brake bracket


got the pipes wrapped



bungs to mount the fender (front fender moved to rear)



Bike as of now



Also did new brake shoes front and back, new clutch cable, front brake cable  and throttle cables
Carbs are being cleaned and rebuilt. New front tire on the way, New dyna coils and dyna electronic timing coming also

Good luck trying to tune that bike with those pipes and also get used to shorter valve life, no back pressure is not a good thing..
