Tank dents for clipons?
« on: June 21, 2010, 05:47:30 AM »
Now I've mounted the controls on my clipons I've noticed there are some clearance issues with the tank at full lock. The only answer I can see is making some dents.

I've read a lot of posts about knee dents but has anyone made dents for clipons? I'd love to see some pictures before I start hammering!

Many sport bikes have such dents. Many sport bikes also limit the lock to lock travel.

If you can stand the limited lock to lock, you can drill the fork lock stub on the stering stem and thread a short screw in. The head of the screw becomes the lock to lock bumper and limits hitting the tank.

Good idea and less drastic than knocking lumps out of my tank! ;D I'll have to check how much that'll effect the turning circle.

I've heard some use miniature hose clamps, tightening them on the fork lock stub,  the screwbuckle becoming the limiting factor. I wouldn't use that as a permanent fix, seems they might come off. But you could get a feel for the limited turning radius.

1/4" hose clamp.  Easy and fast and keeps the clip ons about 1" off the tank at least with the setup I was running.

On my computer at home I saved a pick of a sweet little 350 with dents for clip-ons.  It looks great the way he did it... I'll try to remember to post it later

Cheers

So these turned out to be clubmans... but you get the idea. They're off a Benji build...

I can't say I like the way that looks.

A member here did a more professional job.  For more, look into cornand's build.

Thanks guys,

I still can't decide! I love that Benji's bike and I know Cornand cut his out and reverse welded them; they look great but I'm no welder. Has anyone seen some made with a hammer on a stock tank?
