Well I bought it local 04-19-2010 for 500 bucks. The speedo mileage shows 7400. The pipes, frame, fenders and engine look fair or better. I did a compression test before getting it and the right side was lower. Perhaps after the years some rust has unseated the piston rings. Good chance after 5-6 hours of run time it could set back in. 40 year old bikes can do strange things. The plan is to use more elbow grease for this restoration. Less NOS purchases and more refinishing surfaces. This will not be a show bike and will try to keep the cost down. This will be the old Bonneville, I will never buy...

End product will be back to original Gold with black stripe.

Parts sent to painter. Changed my mind. Will now have white stripe to fully match 1970 model.

I had every intention of pulling all covers off for sanding and buffing with mother's compound out to a shine. While surfing in ebay, I found a guy selling a full cover set for 88.88.

It wasn't perfect but the bike isn't meant to be concourse either. At that price I could not resist. He sent a clutch cover additionally for free but never polished it out. I cleaned with carb cleaner and applied a heat resistant clear coat to it. Bolt on with new screws and gaskets. Done!

The clutch cover is on my list this weekend along with refurbing the seat.

The nos stator cover was around 25 bucks on ebay. The nos emblems were about the same amount.

The exhaust sytem was all buffed out using mothers and fine steel wool.... Seemed to work fairly good.

Gday mate, i don't know if you are interested but someone on this site has a set of Shoei hard bags for a 450, like the ones that look so nice on your 750......would look good on this one as well....

Seat pan painted and cover refurbished.
Very happy with the cover purchased from ebay for 60 bucks.
Has real piping on the seams and a real strap.

I have vacation all week. Rear brakes are a go, electronics are together and carbs with filters done.

I thought careful, and due to financial constraints I'm going to hold for now.
Its a pretty penny to reburb a set nicely.
Not so sure a nice rack with a grab bar might not do the job.

Ran engine and tuned this weekend. Everything seems a GO at this point.
No oil leaks, good engine sound, revs fine, idles and starts good.
Electronics all seem to be in working order.
Waiting on parts from painter. Getting excited.

There seems to be possible chain interference in he counter shaft cover.
While running on the stand I hear a chain rubbing while letting off clutch.
Hmmm...

Engine seems to smoke when hot. Hopefully just needs hard run on the road.

status update:
Bike mostly together waiting almost entirely on parts (tank, ears, headlight bucket, air filter covers) from the painter.
Forks rebuilt and refinished by me, so not so great but better.

Very nice work. I have a 72 450 DOHC I just finished tearing down to the frame for a build up project. I am still in the decision making process on mine. Cafe or Street Tracker is most likely since I was not interested in keeping it stock. Colors and finishes are up in the air as well but I need to find a set of covers like you did so I can experiment with polish, bead blast, anodizing, and/or painting.
