took a spill today
« on: February 09, 2006, 03:30:10 PM »
Hey All,
Nice enought to ride here tosay got to mid 50's and 32 tomorrow. One my way hame I got to the store and on my way some A$$hat decided to spray mag gloride on the corner of Broadway and Arapahoe going north. I had a green arrow not thinking nothing of it take the corner about 2 mph. next thing I'm on the ground faceing into trafic with a truck turn right after me. He stopped and said he could see it and turned on his overhead lights and stoped. He is a biker and did the same thing to his 1300 last weekend. I could nopt believe there is no damage other than the front brake cap unscrewed when i hit the gound. Othere than enbarrasment nothing hurt. Oh point cover got dinged up.

Mag gloride is a substitute they use instead of salt or sand. they say it keeps the roads from freezeing. It stays on the road for a couple days after they spray it down but no chance of snow for weeks. It was just around this one corner.
Thank's, all, already working on my head  ;D  smokey in here.  :)
It was actually pretty gracefull fall, I hope it never happens again.
Slicker than snot. LOL

Glad to hear you are ok, and still in one piece.
The bike can be fixed, replaced, made better , etc....

I did almost the same thing a few years back, on one of those "warm" winter days.
I didn't actually fall , but more of a sideways powerslide into on-comming traffic.

Glad your OK,

That stuff is suppost to be more environmentally friendly to the environment then salt.  I'll take the sand and salt over it anyday.

Motorcycle News here in the UK has been trying to find out whats changed with the SH@T they are spraying on our roads. Anyone who rides past November KNOWS it's making the roads slick but the local authorities are all denying it. I guess it's going to take some court casses to bring out the truth. In the mean time it's safer to ride in the rain than dry in winter!
In the UK anything over 40 years old only needs insurance and Fuel.

Glad your Ok Paul.

I took my bike out a few days ago when it was dry but cold. First time out since November. Did the same on a corner  and nearly lost the back wheel. Actually put my foot down to stop the fall. Managed to get upright again but I discovered my joints aren't as supple as they used to be. Ouch. Thought the skid was a bit of oil on a new patch of tarmac but I think I'll look closer to see what the council are putting down this year.

Tak it easy a'bidy!  ;)

Sounds like dangerous stuff.. glad you and the bike are OK. I am very cautious at this time of year as the roads appear dry but can be very slippery!
A guy I know took a spill on a roundabout at 15mph when he hit a patch of salt/sand in the mornign after the council had sprayed and he was shocked that he went down! He was on a brand new R6!!!
Anyone know if we use that stuff in the UK??

Ah the joys of winter riding - Almost had a spill myself last week - no one to blame but myself, skidded out on some gravel going around a corner. Managed to keep everything upright but certainly got the heart racing and made for a much more cautious trip home.

Glad to hear no real damage done to you or the bike. :)

too bad paul!  glad you're ok.  i'll expect another ride will be good for the soul.

so guys, mag chloride is fairly new... colorado is one of the first (or few places) to use it... it was also a big seller to the public when they told us it would not rust our cars and bikes like salt does.

hmmmm... too bad they proved a couple years back that it actually does rust our cars and bikes  :(

the ill part is that it may take more than a few lawsuits to change - it may take a few serious accidents, or dare i say it, deaths - how long did it take for seatbelts to become standard issue???

They've experimented with its use here in Michigan. I haven't hear too much about it recently though. It seemed affective, but expensive. For the most part they still use salt and in residential areas it's mixed with sand. Once everything dries though, the residue of both is hazardous to bikers until it is either washed away by rain or driven to the shoulders by traffic.

It burns me the way government just ignores motorcycles. There are more bikes on the road these days than ever before and there are oinly going to be more. With the way gas prices and oil prices are and the cost of a car that is capable of getting the mileage we get, motorcycles are low cost all around, unless you just have to have that harley!

Crap like this should not happen but governments are too cheap to look around for a good solution.

pleased your OK, bet I can make you laugh though.

In my younger and more inexperienced days I had an old CB200,
I was coming home late one night from work on England's curvy country roads - and it was a bit foggy,

Anyway, the bike spluttered and I fumbled for the petrol tap to switch over to reserve.
Briefly I glanced down to switch over, and when I lookup up again, there was a big "Black and White" chevron sign to warning me of a sharp left hand bend.

I thew up my arms, hit the sign square in the chest, the bike went under the sign and carried on into a field leaving me draped over the top of the sign, watching the taillight disappear into the night.

Still I'm pleased your OK, and I hope I made you giggle

JonnyHonda,

Have to say, the image that congered up was pretty funny. Hope you weren't hurt too bad. How'd the 200 make out?

Doesnt that #$%* eat aluminuminim?  Thought I heard it a couple years ago.
Not that I'm defending the county but its supposed to be aplied before the snow and it did snow on the other end of town.  I with they wouldnt use anything and just plow.  If you cant drive in the snow stay home.  But most people  cant drive when its a little rainy.
JonnyHonda,  that sounded like something out off a drunken biker movie.

funny story. It snowed last night and a little this morning. I did go to the corner I spilled on and It was as dry as a new diaper.  Just something else to look for on the roads.

Straight up, that's how it happend, I was only about 20 at the time, the cb200 was fine, no harm done, I however had a massively bruised ego, and had to suffer many a s after I told the lads down the pub.
