charging question
« on: June 21, 2010, 05:19:09 PM »
over winter, tore some of my bike down and had the fried ground leads from coils to reg/rect.  wanted to see if my bike was charging properly, and recently i tested my alternator on my jeep...used my multimeter and with positive/negative hooked up to battery was about 12.6, with jeep running was about 13.4 or something, so i knew i didnt have a bad alternator.

is this similar to my cb550?  had a little over 12 on the multimeter hooked up to battery, then running and revving engine to about 3K rpms, i was displaying about 12.3 or so.  that mean im charging?

Should be more in the 13.5 range at that rpm.

At 3K RPM the battery voltage should be rising.  Watch fro trends.  The battery doesn't change voltage very fast.  At least you hope it doesn't, otherwise as soon as you turned the key on it would rapidly fall to zero and be useless.  Recharging takes as much or more time as it does to deplete the battery depending on the rate of discharge or recharge.

12.3 V is really nothing to brag about, though.  Depends on the load being placed on the battery.
