74 CB750 Project
« on: June 22, 2010, 09:57:59 AM »
I was looking at craigslist for about a year, looking for something cheap that I wouldn't mind taking apart and learning as I go. I've never taken apart a motorcycle before and really wanted something to work on.

I came across a stripped down disassembled 550. I went to look at it but it looked like too much to figure out for my first try.

the next day i checked craigslist and found a 74 CB750 for $675 with a huge tub of extra parts, and a barrel of extra stuff. he had drag bars on it with an extra set of clubman bars and this home made cafe seat that he made with extra fiberglass from his boat.

it didn't start so i took the gamble and brought it home. 4 hours later, new battery, oil change my friend and I had it running (rough).

Wow. You got a steal of a deal on that bike.  Wish I had seen that ad...

What are your plans for it?  If its already running, probably won't take much.

I figured out how to post pictures in the forums FAQ.  :)

Found this on cragislist 74 CB750 K

Brought it home got a new battery, did oil change, changed bars/grips, little spray paint.

took the rear fender off, got a new tail light. I had a friend make a bracket for the license plate and the new tail light using the turn signals to attach it to the frame.

Last weekend I removed the airbox and the carbs for cleaning, which I've never done before but found a pretty good website for instructions.

So here is what I have right now.

I can't wait to get it all back together, I am picking up some memory foam to remake the seat and new plugs on my way home from work.

It's been a while, just updating what I've done to the bike.

I cleaned out the jets and reassembled the carbs. New plugs and put it all back on the bike.  took the tank down to raw metal and found out that there was about an inch of bondo on the right side and a big dent, which made me not feel bad about putting knee indents in it. and some other dents in it just to reinforce that this tank is beat up.

but after sitting for 6 years then some routine maintenance it runs great.

Now, I'm going to remake that seat as the CARPET PADDING the previous owner used to make it is moldy under the leather. I picked up some 3" high density foam from a sewing place and some wine red marine vinyl. that should look pretty sweet.

The 3" foam didn't work, I'm going to try to find a thick exercise mat to cut up. I also decided to wait until winter and just buy a new seat. I'm looking at the CB75021M from airtech, it mounts directly to the frame rails.

I have had trouble with the front brake sticking, I read all of the forums on here about it and just ordered all new brake hoses, pads, piston, bleeder. when i started bleeding the stock (and too long for clubmans) brake lines you wouldn't believe the consistency and color of the brake fluid, dark green/brown snot. instead of trying to salvage the stock ones with the cracked housing, it's just not worth it. I bought shortened ones from slingshot cycles

i got new pads, bleeder, brake bleeder kit, clip on bars and a universal headlight bracket that attaches to the forks just under the clip on bars from eBay. waiting for all that to arrive. I will post pictures after i get all that stuff on the bike.
