How many miles?
« on: February 09, 2006, 07:56:02 PM »
I was reading Hondaman's 500/550 tips (yowza, thanks!) when a thought occurred to me.  Advice was to change the oil pump after 20,000 miles.  I have 35,000 on her so I start thinking about this.  But wait! I don't have OEM gauges.  For all I know it may actually have anywhere from 1,000 to 100,000.  Is there anyway to determine how many miles this may have on it?

I'm not really interested in an actual figure but rather a range for preventative maintenance purposes.  I suspect a thorough inspection would reveal the general condition and a 'To-do' list, but I'm a newbie who doesn't know what the heck I'm looking at.  If I can see something is wrong, chances are it's already way beyond catastrophic.

Thanks.

Ten thousand hard miles can put the same wear on a bike that a hundred thousand miles of gentle, restrained riding will. Things like not changing oil regularly, not greasing bearings, being left outside, etc. will very quickly age a motorcycle.

I don't know of any indicators that will give you an idea of how many miles are on the bike. But to be honest the wear on the bike is measureable in a thousand places and will give you an idea of the condition, which is more important.

You never know if a PO has put 10k worth of miles on it with no speedo cable, I have a '76 750 F1 with 35k on the clock and a 79 F2 with 55K on the clock.

Change the oil twice the recommended (or should that be half  ;D - I mean twice as often), use top quality oil (that's a thread in itself), and if your concerned about the oil pump, whip it out and check it with some feeler gauges.

Nice login name though, Douglas Adams fan by any chance.

Wasn't Bistromath Slartibartfast's spaceship?

It used an "SEP" field as a "cloaking" device.
