Is this turbo too small?
« on: May 26, 2010, 09:08:10 AM »
New guy here.

I am known for twisted ideas for insane projects and I have a question for the turbo gurus.

The project is a 1978 cb750. The bike has low hours and has been sitting in dry storage for years. I have a turbo that was given to me that I want to adapt onto it. It's from a 1120 Cubic Centimeter Kubota diesel engine. A Lombardini TD025M-03C, with a 17lb wastegate.

I've been doing the research on it, but come up with very little. No maps, common A/R ratios, parts, etc. All I found were guys trying to adapt these things to go-karts.... http://www.turbokart.com/turbo_exciter.htm

Is this thing too small? Since the diesel it came off of will only spin to 3800RPM, and is only 33% larger than the 750... will it spin up too fast to notice?

Thanks for any input.

Oh... and check out my other crazy invention... http://www.ford-trucks.com/user_gallery/displayalbum.php?&userid=278507&albumid=39259

Seems that's it's just on the smaller side of things for a 750cc, specs say 200cc-600cc.. but two of them...  ;D

The main concern is what RPM is this turbo rated at ?  If it was designed for a small diesel engine, the RPM rating is probably low as diesel engines have a very low rpm redline.   ;D

Yeah, 750 cc's of expanding exhaust gasses at 9000 rpm would surely cause some self destruction.

Maybe I can put it on a lawnmower... lol.

I'm voting for acquiring a second for a twin turbo CB project. :)

That would be fun... and different. I kind of like it.
I'll see if my friend can obtain another one (he works for a Kubota dealership).

For a twin turbo setup i would highly recommend using IHI turbo's.  They have small AR's and are designed for high rpm's.
Also, you would have to increase the engine size way beyond anything that is available for these engines in order to run duel turbo's
and to make it work.   :-\

Ive been on HMT for over 6 years and small turbos are where its at. Basically you want a turbo that will spool EASILY for the engine its paired with. If youre building a dope street/strip bike, keep it simple and smaller than your means 8psi packs a punch, and if your engine can handle past 12psi a smaller turbo should have no problem giving you all the power you want. Ive really only been exposed to smaller turbos, and have really only heard of problems with the bigger ones.

what you want is a twin turbo large/small setup if your engine and body can handle it. its something ive wanted to build for a while. large turbo feeds of turbo manifold, smaller turbo feeds off larger turbo downpipe, while also feeding the larger turbo, the large turbo obviously feeding the engine. Saw a fairly (stock) civic with that setup while i was street racing a while back. i was fortunate enough to get a ride. turbo lag was a thing of the past and at 12psi the car was a blast.

do yourself a favor, dont listen to me, but save the little guy :-)

I know nothing about turbos but the system mentioned  by this new poster is a compound system.
Mates of mine have been working on such a system on their drag bike.

On a street bike anything that spools up quick menas more usable RPM band on the street....i.e. more torque, which is nice.  A big turbo with lots of lag on the street is bad, because you never get to enjoy it.
