Australia has a new Prime Minister
« on: June 23, 2010, 05:06:24 PM »
It's just been announced that Kevin Rudd has stepped aside this morning and we now have our first woman Prime Minister.
Julia Gillard.
Interesting times and I think that she will be a good leader.

The opinion polls haven't been too good for Kevin Rudd for quite a while and there has been a lot of dissatisfaction within his own party senior ranks for a period of time.

The general opinion is that when he backflipped on the Emmisions Trading Scheme (Copenhagen) after saying that it was a moral issue for us all, didn't do anything for his popularity.

Another issue that stirred up a hornets nest within the senior Labor Party ranks was when he went to a photo session with Kate Blanchett instead of attending the funeral of Senator John Button who was a truly dedicated man to his cause and also held in very high regard on both sides of politics.

I think that it's fair to say that Kevin Rudd rose to the top by the polls and now he's been axed by the polls.
He was a hard working man and had some good ideas but he made a few fatal decisions that bought him down.

Sorry Mick but there was no back flip, with the far right leading the Liberal party that policy was never going to get through, back flip was just politics and media bull#$%*. And if the labour party loose the next election they can blame Bill Shorten and the twits on the labour right, they are the ones that pushed for change when in fact Tony Abbott had a snowballs chance in hell of winning the next election any way. Who wants an ex priest that wants to push HIS moral opinions on all of us, this sort of #$%* happens in the US....not here....

That seems fairly tame.  Not like our politicians who run off to see their mistress in Brazil or solicit sex in an airport men's restroom.  Maybe your standards are too high. ;D ;D ;D

Good luck with the new PM.

.....however, a country is really just a business and like business, bunkfests are part of it. Count your blessings,at least we can have a bit of a hand in picking our leaders (even though ALL of them are flippant vote seekers ::) ). Death squads don't fly in the free world. (OH SH_T, I forgot about the RCMP running rampant, tasering the populace... a-holes)

I get the part of an ex-priest pushing his views on the populace, but stop for a minute and think. Not everyone shares my, or your or the other fella's politics or agenda's. It's the beauty of our systems... the parliaments or congresses keep the clowns from pulling real boners! LONG LIVE MINORITY GOVERNMENT IN THE GREAT WHITE NORTH!

Let's hear it for our Aussie and Kiwi cousins! You guys ROCK. May your politicians keep their noses out of your day to day lives!

I'm not a Labour Party voter. Being ex-defence, Labour is very anti defence, and always has been, they'd rather give the Australian Tax Payers money to unemployed pregnant illegal immigrant gay whales because when we're everybody's friends, why do we need a defence force anyway, right?

The current Labour government has lurched from one disaster to another since they got back in in 2007, Kevin was an absolute dud with anger management issues who cried like a baby when he got shown the door, and Julia (a self professed Marxist Communist and proud of it) who stabbed him in the back is just as guilty of mismanagement of taxpayers money and creating massive debt (currently, the Australian government is borrowing 1 billion dollars a week from the Chinese and Saudi's, whereas the previous government left them a massive surplus) that generations of Australian taxpayers will be working to pay off for many years to come.

Tony Abbot (Opposition leader) is a jerk, and there's no-one in the Liberal/National party coalition (the only other horse in town) that I can think of, who would be an effective leader, so they're screwed too.

I've been suggesting for months that the Labour Government's only chance of retaining government in the up-coming election was to dump Kevin and install Julia, as automatically, almost half of Australian voters (most of the women in Australia) will vote labour, because, quite understandably, having a woman Prime Minister is a huge thing for the womens movement, and I agree that there's nothing wrong with a woman steering the ship, I just wish Julia wasn't such a lying conniving sack of sh1t and her government wasn't such a useless bunch of hippies, union organisers and overpaid, under achieving public servant oxygen thieves. Things are not boding well for Aussies right now...........  ::)
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

Word... :(

I try to tell them all the time, 10,000 years ago the ice age ended and the earth has bee getting warmer ever since. Don't they know that tropical forests, petrified have been found inside the arctic circle? These people ignore such facts because it doesn't fit the agenda. Sorry that your politicians are such a disappointment. At least here in Canuck, we have a conservative gov't kept honest by minority.

We've had a few tyre kickers along the way since John Howard got booted out.
And there is still a few dickheads who think that they can do the job.
They've tried and missed the bus.
That is on both sides of the swing.

It's a bloody embarressment to see some of these (To use Terry's term) "oxygen thieves" beating their drum and to think that they can represent the elite.  ;D

I reckon that Julia Gillard will do a good job.
She's a determined, no BS woman. (And of Irish decent)
Love her or leave her, I can't think of another that will come close to her, and that's from either side of the political agenda.

Ha ha, go for it mate, I didn't invent it! As far as who's a good leader and who's not, people tend to forget that the majority of Aussie voters vote for a political party, and only the members electorate actually votes for the individual, so only a small portion of Labour party voters voted for Kevin (who was fired after only 2.5 years in the job.........) and only a small portion of Labour party voters voted for Julia, but all Labour party voters voted for the Labour party, so the party has the right to fire any minister that they want to, including, as we've just seen, the Prime Minister.

What this basically means is that voting for Labour is voting for some unknown factional leaders who actually control this particular party, of which Julia is not the leader, but rather, just the spokesperson for their policies. She doesn't run the government, they do. If she steps over the line and displeases her political masters, or her popularity drops, she gets "executed" like Kevin did.

My concern here, is that most Labour party voters don't know this, they think that Julia is the boss, and has the power to run the government, when really, she's just the Labour party's backroom bureaucrat's mouth piece. For these reasons and a whole lot more, I don't know how anyone could trust them enough to vote for them, but in Oz, political party loyalty is like loyalty for a football team, or a brand for a car or motorcycle, so regardless of how bad the Labour government has done in the last couple of years, they've got a very good chance (now that Kevin's been given the arse) of winning the upcoming election and running the country for another 3 years or so. As I said before, things are not boding well for Aussies right now...........  ::)
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.
